The Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre (AARC) has moved well beyond its 2023 design milestone: construction began in January 2025, and in August 2026 water started flowing into its outdoor 50-metre pool. The City of Wanneroo currently forecasts completion in October 2026 and an opening in November 2026; those dates remain projections, not confirmation that the centre is open.
What was the 2023 milestone?
On 4 May 2023, PerthNow reported that the City of Wanneroo had appointed Donovan Payne Architects to deliver detailed design for the AARC. Two other businesses were to provide cost-planner services. This was a design-stage appointment, not a construction start or opening announcement. PerthNow reported the appointment on 4 May 2023.
The 2023 report described the project as a $70 million facility at that time and said geothermal heating was being explored to help offset carbon emissions. The City still describes geothermal heating as under investigation; it has not confirmed that the system will be installed. Mayor Linda Aitken said at the time, “I look forward to the detailed designs being developed over the next 12 months.”
What is the latest construction progress?
The City approved the construction tender in December 2024 and appointed PS Structures Pty Ltd, with site works scheduled to begin in January 2025. In August 2026, the City reported water flowing into the eight-lane outdoor 50-metre pool, which it described as the first of its kind in the City. The three indoor pools and children’s splash pad were next to be filled, followed by testing of pool systems ahead of opening. The City said the full aquatic system would require about 3 million litres of water—nearly 90 domestic swimming pools—and feature more than 100,000 pool tiles. When is the centre expected to open?
The City’s current project page forecasts completion in October 2026 and an expected opening in November 2026. These are forward-looking dates, and the cited updates do not establish that the centre has opened. The City appointed Bluefit Pty Ltd to operate the centre on 10 February 2026. The operator appointment announcement is dated 10 February 2026.

What facilities are planned?
The centre is planned as an aquatic, fitness and community-sport facility for people of all ages and abilities. The City lists:
- Indoor and outdoor swimming pools, including the eight-lane, 50-metre outdoor pool
- A gym and fitness facilities
- Sports courts
- A children’s splash pad
- A crèche, café, change rooms and parking
The site is within Alkimos Central, north of Romeo Road and beside the future Alkimos METRONET station. The City says the pools will be heated, while geothermal heating remains under investigation. The 2023 report cited John Quiigley MLA’s estimate that 10,000 local students would benefit once the centre opened; this was his estimate, not a verified student enrolment count.

How is the project funded, and what is its budget?
The City’s project page lists $56.8 million in funding commitments across three sources. The City’s 2024–25 annual report separately describes an approximately $88 million total project budget. These figures refer to different things: committed contributions are not the same as the total project budget.
