Construction of +POOL’s POOL1 pilot began in 2026 and was nearly complete by July 29, but the floating pool was not installed at Pier 35 that summer. The project team said coastal-resiliency utility work and replacement of the sewer line needed for the pool’s filtration system prevented installation. It is working toward installation the following year, but has not announced a confirmed public opening date.
What is New York’s floating pool project?
POOL1 is a pilot facility for +POOL, a larger floating-pool concept planned for Pier 35 on the East River. Unlike the original plus-shaped concept, POOL1 is a rectangular section intended to demonstrate river-water filtration and swimming. The custom steel structure draws East River water, treats it on site and supplies the pool. Filter backwash waste is routed to the sewer, while filtered water is returned to the river. What is being built?
According to +POOL’s published 2026 specifications, the pilot is more than 320 tons and has a 1,745-square-foot basin holding 62,126 gallons. Its stainless-steel shell has a reinforced PVC membrane liner, and 22 wall jets run around the perimeter. The pool slopes from 4 to 7 feet deep. Below deck, the system includes 21 pumps and three filtration and disinfection systems. These are figures reported by the project organization, not independent measurements. +POOL project overview
Why was the +POOL delayed?
On July 29, 2026, +POOL said the pilot was nearly complete but could not be installed at Pier 35 that summer. Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resiliency work was still underway, and the sewer line the project had permission to use was being replaced. The team said it was working with agency partners to extend or amend the project approvals for installation the following year. That describes an intended next step, not a guaranteed installation date. Earlier government announcements included earlier projected demonstration or opening dates; the July 2026 update supersedes those as a guide to the current schedule.
When will the NYC floating pool open?
There is no confirmed public opening date. The project team’s stated aim is to install the pilot in the year after its July 2026 update, but installation alone would not mean the pool is ready for public swimming. The project still needs full-scale filtration testing and agency observation, followed by construction of the public-use facilities. The team has said it obtained all 17 city, state and federal approvals required for the demonstration and is pursuing changes to those approvals for the next installation opportunity. +POOL project update

What construction has happened so far?
+POOL marked the start of construction on May 1, 2026. Work involved converting the pilot shell into a functional floating pool by installing the basin, filtration system, piping and mechanical components. The project overview says filtration testing was completed in 2024 and the pilot shell arrived in New York in 2025; the 2026 work was the next stage toward a Pier 35 installation and full-scale testing. +POOL project overview
The organization described the Pier 35 installation and testing as steps before a second construction phase for public use. That later build-out is expected to include a deck, lifeguard stations, showers, bathrooms and locker rooms. Until testing, agency observation and that public-facility work are complete, the pilot should be understood as a construction and demonstration project rather than an operating public pool.

How the pilot differs from the original +POOL concept
The original concept envisioned a plus-shaped floating pool. POOL1 is a smaller rectangular pilot intended to test the filtration approach and demonstrate the system in the river. Its construction milestones—building the floating facility, installing it, proving filtration at full scale and completing public amenities—are distinct stages, not interchangeable dates for an opening.
