Self-Healing Concrete in the U.S.: What the Research and Trials Actually Show

Self-healing concrete is under study in the U.S., but the term covers different methods and the evidence points to specific tests and trials—not a nationwide rollout.

Self-healing concrete is being researched and tested in the United States, but the available evidence does not show that a new crack-fixing concrete is in widespread or routine use. The term covers several different approaches, and reported results range from partial crack healing in laboratory specimens to a Bureau of Reclamation trial placement—not proof that concrete can repair every crack or restore a structure’s full strength.

Is self-healing concrete being used in the U.S.?

There is U.S. research and at least one reported trial placement, but those are not the same as broad commercial deployment. The Bureau of Reclamation describes investigating polymer-capsule repair for aging concrete structures and separately reports three placements totaling approximately 100 cubic yards of concrete containing a magnesia additive. That volume is a trial, not evidence of routine use across U.S. construction. Bureau of Reclamation polymer-capsule project; Bureau of Reclamation magnesia placements.

DARPA described BRACE as a 4.5-year research effort focused initially on military use cases, with possible civilian utility if successful. That describes a research program, not a commercial rollout. DARPA, “Concrete in Disrepair? DARPA May Help You BRACE It,” March 23, 2023.

The most detailed U.S. bridge-deck evidence in these sources is a Utah Department of Transportation study published in 2025. It tested quicklime concrete mixtures under controlled conditions; it does not establish that those mixes are in routine bridge construction. Utah DOT report UT-25.23.

What does “self-healing concrete” mean?

It is an umbrella term for mixes designed to limit water entry, encourage deposits in cracks, or deliver a repair agent when a crack forms. The mechanisms are not interchangeable, and studies using different materials and test methods cannot be treated as a single head-to-head ranking.

Approach How it is intended to work What the cited evidence tested
Polymer capsules A crack can rupture capsules embedded in concrete; water entering the crack activates a polymer solution that fills it. The Bureau of Reclamation describes this as an investigated repair approach for aging structures, not a general-use product. Bureau of Reclamation project.
Quicklime (calcium oxide) An additive intended to encourage mineral precipitation that can close cracks. Utah DOT tested 2% and 4% quicklime concrete against a control mix, including cyclic water/air-drying and deicing-salt/air-drying exposures. Utah DOT report UT-25.23.
Bacterial or fungal agents Biological agents can promote carbonate formation that may fill or partly seal cracks. A U.S. transportation research study tested bacterial and fungal agents in mortar specimens and reported preliminary healing indicators. Transportation research report on fungal-induced carbonate precipitation.
Crystalline admixtures Admixtures are intended to reduce permeability and water or chloride ingress, including around cracks. A 2024 marine-exposure study compared a crystalline-admixture series with a bacteria-based agent under its specific crack and submersion conditions. 2024 marine-exposure study.

What did U.S. tests find about crack closure?

Quicklime bridge-deck concrete

In the Utah DOT study, researchers monitored induced microcracks and macrocracks for 180 days while specimens underwent cyclic water/air-drying or deicing-salt/air-drying exposure. The report found 100% surface closure for microcracks in specimens with 4% quicklime. That figure describes the measured surface closure of those microcracks in the study; it does not mean every crack closed through its full depth or that the specimens regained full structural capacity.

For macrocracks, the authors reported healing from 24% under water exposure to 69% under deicing-salt exposure. They cautioned that salt exposure sometimes produced superficial sodium chloride crystallization, so visible deposits should not automatically be taken as proof of durable crack repair. They also reported 23% higher electrical resistivity for the quicklime mixtures as a durability indicator. These are study-specific findings, not guaranteed field performance. Utah DOT report UT-25.23.

Biological agents in mortar

The U.S. transportation study tested bacteria and fungi in mortar specimens. After a 16-day curing period, it reported partial healing indicators based on wave-speed and water-absorption measurements and characterized the findings as preliminary. Mortar results over this period do not demonstrate readiness for structural concrete construction or long-term field performance. Transportation research report.

Marine exposure and corrosion

A 2024 study submerged test specimens for 12 months. Under those conditions, the bacteria-based agent reduced chloride ingress but had limitations in preventing corrosion in cracked specimens. The crystalline-admixture series reduced chloride ingress and prevented reinforcement corrosion in healed samples and specimens with 100 μm cracks. Those results apply to the tested materials, crack sizes, and marine exposure; they do not establish the same outcome for all concrete near seawater. 2024 marine-exposure study.

What crack sizes can it repair?

There is no single crack-width limit for “self-healing concrete” because the mechanism and test conditions vary. The Utah DOT quicklime study distinguishes microcracks from macrocracks, reporting complete surface closure in a specific microcrack set and partial macrocrack healing under its exposures. The marine study reports results for specimens with 100 μm cracks. Those figures should not be combined into a universal maximum width: they come from different mixes, environments, and measurements.

Surface closure, reduced water absorption, lower permeability, and reduced chloride ingress are useful but distinct measurements. A crack that looks closed at the surface may remain open internally, and a durability indicator is not a direct measurement of restored load-bearing capacity.

Does self-healing concrete become stronger or last longer?

Some studies report improvements in selected strength or durability indicators, but the evidence here does not establish that self-healing concrete universally becomes stronger or extends a structure’s service life by a known amount. Utah DOT found some measured strength and durability indicators improved in quicklime mixes, alongside a reported 23% higher electrical resistivity. The marine study found reduced chloride ingress for tested admixtures, with different corrosion outcomes by agent. Neither result establishes a general service-life extension for bridges or other structures.

Crack closure should not be treated as a substitute for inspection, engineering assessment, or conventional repair when a structure is damaged. The cited work evaluates specific specimens and indicators; it does not show that a healed appearance alone proves a structure is safe.

What are the construction tradeoffs?

The Utah DOT study found that adding 4% quicklime reduced workability and setting time. That matters during batching, placement, and finishing: an additive that improves a laboratory healing measure may also make a mix harder to handle, and field implementation would need to account for the particular mix design and construction process. The study also notes superficial salt crystallization in some salt-exposed specimens, which complicates interpretation of apparent macrocrack healing.

Biological and crystalline approaches likewise require evaluation in the concrete, crack, and exposure conditions where they would be used. The available studies do not support choosing one approach as best for every project or assuming that a lab result will transfer unchanged to a job site.
