Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you need a quick estimate and have no ruler, use dimensions you have learned from your own hand, fingers, or foot. These personal references can help with rough lengths; calibrated strides can help estimate a walked distance. Neither replaces a ruler when precision matters.
How to use your body as a measuring reference
Measure your own hand and foot once, then remember the dimensions you are most likely to need. Gareth Branwyn’s Make: article recommends learning the width of your open and closed hand spans, the length of a finger and its joints, and the actual length of your foot. As Branwyn puts it, “They don’t call feet, feet, for nothin.’”
- Use a ruler or tape measure to record your own hand spans, finger and joint lengths, and foot length.
- Memorize the measurements, or keep them somewhere handy until you know them.
- When you need a rough estimate, compare the object with the relevant part of your body. For a small object, a finger or joint may be useful; for a longer one, use a hand span or foot length.
These references are personal, not standard units: another person’s hand or foot may be a different size. A reader tip reported by Branwyn is to compare an object with a body part, then measure that body part later. That can help you estimate an object after the fact, but it is still an informal method.
Estimate angles in the sky with your hand
When your arm is extended, hand widths can give a quick, approximate sense of angular width in the sky. The values below are rules of thumb reported in the Make: article, which attributes them to One Minute Astronomer; they are not precision standards.

- PRECISION - fractional & continuous measurements displayed on a large LCD screen are accurate to ±1/16 inch - Up to 130ft/40m
- COMFORTABLE - Anti-skid high impact rubberized ABS case, AutoLock tape mechanism, 3/4" dual-sided print scale with nylon coating and true-zero magnetic hook
- FEATURES - Auto Off technology, Belt clip, Stud center markings, One year warranty, 2*AAA battery and screwdriver included.
| Hand reference at arm’s length | Approximate angle |
|---|---|
| Thumb to little finger, hand spread | 25 degrees |
| Index finger to little finger | 15 degrees |
| Fist width | 10 degrees |
| Three middle fingers together | 5 degrees |
| Little-finger width | 1 degree |
Use the same extended-arm position when making these comparisons. Treat the result as a broad estimate, not an exact angle measurement.
Estimate a walked distance with a calibrated stride
A stride can help when you need to estimate a distance you can walk. One reader suggestion in Branwyn’s article is to calibrate your stride length, then count strides across the distance. This is a practical informal tip, not a formal test: the estimate depends on how consistently you walk and count.

- 2-in-1 Laser Measure & Digital Tape Measure: This versatile laser tape measure combines a 165 ft laser distance meter with a 9.8 ft digital tape measure, giving you the flexibility to measure both long distances and small details with one tool. Easily switch modes depending on the task—perfect for home renovation, construction, interior design, real estate, and DIY projects
- HD IPS Color Display: Unlike standard LCD tools, this laser measure features a 1.47" IPS color display (172×320 resolution, 500-nit brightness) that shows both laser and digital tape measurements on one screen. The high-visibility display keeps readings clear indoors or outdoors, helping you measure faster without repeated checks
- High-Precision & Angle Measurement: Designed for precision work, this laser distance meter delivers ±1/8 in laser accuracy and ±1/16 in digital tape accuracy. The built-in dual-axis electronic angle measurement (±1°) helps improve layout accuracy for installations, framing, and alignment tasks while reducing manual reading errors
- 6 Units & 3 Modes & 3 References: This professional distance meter measuring tool supports 6 units (ft, ft+in, in, m, cm, mm) and 3 measuring modes (distance, area, volume). Choose from 3 reference points (front, rear, screw hole) for flexible measuring in tight spaces. The tripod-compatible design allows stable long-distance laser measurement
- USB-C Charging & 30 Data Storage: The rechargeable laser tape measure uses a USB-C charging port and supports 5,000+ measurements per charge(cable not included). Built-in memory stores up to 30 measurement records, making it easy to review data during planning, installation, or project estimation
What a thumb-and-car estimate can—and cannot—tell you
Branwyn illustrates distance estimation by comparing a car’s apparent height with a thumb held at arm’s length. Using an assumed car height of about 5 feet (1.5 meters), the example arrives at a range of roughly 300 feet (90 meters). This is an illustration based on assumed dimensions, not a tested accuracy result. Do not treat it as a dependable measurement of a vehicle’s distance.

Body-based references are useful when you only need a rough estimate and no measuring tool is available. For construction layout, material cutting, fit, or any task where an error could waste material or affect safety, use an appropriate ruler, tape measure, or other suitable measuring instrument instead.
