The collapse at Ihuatzio in Michoacán was partial: the central portion of the south façade of one pyramidal platform gave way on the night of July 29, 2024. Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) said intense rain entered cracks that had formed after high temperatures and drought. It also cited harmful effects from older restoration techniques and materials as part of the structure’s conservation condition.
What collapsed at Ihuatzio?
The incident affected the South Platform at the Ihuatzio archaeological zone, not an entire pyramid. INAH’s initial assessment reported damage to at least six stepped sections, including the exterior wall of stone slabs, the platform’s core, and its retaining wall. The collapse was in the central part of the south façade.
Ihuatzio is one of the principal archaeological centers associated with the Purépecha polity, alongside Pátzcuaro and Tzintzuntzan. Its remains include yácata pyramidal structures, raised paths, and a plaza. That context explains the site’s historical significance without implying that the whole complex was lost.
What did INAH say caused the collapse?
INAH described a sequence: earlier high temperatures and drought caused cracks, and intense rainfall then favored water filtration into the pre-Hispanic structure. The rain in the Lake Pátzcuaro basin was reported as above the expected average, but the incident account did not give a measured rainfall total.

The institute also identified older restoration techniques and materials that are no longer used because of their negative effects on conservation. INAH presented these as factors in the structure’s conservation condition, alongside the weather sequence; it did not claim that any single factor alone explains the collapse.
The official account did not attribute the event specifically to climate change. Its explanation is about the reported conditions and damage at Ihuatzio, not proof of a broader climate trend.

How did authorities respond?
INAH staff began assessing the damage on July 30, 2024. In a bulletin published August 7, the institute said damage quantification and intervention planning were still under way. It described the response as interdisciplinary, with work intended both to recover the affected area and to intervene more deeply in the structure.
INAH also said it notified insurer Agroasemex on July 30 to begin seeking funds for the intervention. The official accounts available here do not establish when restoration was completed or the platform’s present-day condition.
