To use a handsaw well, match its tooth pattern and style to the cut, then guide the blade with a light, steady stroke rather than forcing it. Rip cuts follow the grain; crosscuts go across it. A ryoba can handle both directions, while a fine dovetail saw suits precise joinery. Practice on scrap before cutting finished work, and use a guide only when the saw and stock fit its limits.
Choose a handsaw for the cut and the workpiece
Start with four questions: are you cutting with or across the grain, how large or deep is the cut, how fine does the finish need to be, and is this rough stock preparation or joinery? Tooth form, blade stiffness, and how the saw is used all affect suitability. No single tooth count or handsaw type is best for every wood and cut.
- Rip cut: follows the wood grain. A rip-tooth pattern is shaped for this direction.
- Crosscut: cuts across the grain. A crosscut-tooth pattern is shaped for severing fibres across their direction.
- Fine joinery: favors control and a clean, accurate kerf; a short, stiff-backed saw is one option.
- Rough stock preparation: prioritize a saw suited to the size and direction of the cut rather than assuming a fine joinery saw is the right tool.
Veritas’s tenon-saw examples show the difference in tooth geometry: its cited rip saw has 9 teeth per inch and its crosscut saw has 12. These are specifications for those particular saws, not a universal rule for choosing tooth count. Veritas Tenon Saws
Understand the main saw options
Japanese ryoba: two tooth rows, pull-stroke cutting
A ryoba has one tooth row for rip cuts and another for crosscuts, making it a versatile option for learning pull-stroke sawing. The blade cuts as it is drawn toward you. Woodcraft describes moving the work or the cutting position as the kerf advances; keep the blade aligned with the intended line and let the stroke do the work rather than twisting the blade. Its two-sided design has a drawback: on a deep or long crosscut, the opposite row can mark the smooth surface. Woodcraft’s Japanese Saw Guide for Beginners

- An Idea Gift for Woodworker, Carpenter and Craft Man
- Optimal Blade Size: Through numerous manual tests, We found that the 6" Japanese saw blade is the ideal size for precise cutting, enabling easy flush and finish cuts.
- Durable and Flexible Saw Blade: The hand saw blade is made of SK5 high-carbon steel. The Japanese pull saw teeth are processed by a high-frequency hardening machine imported from Japan, and the hardness can reach HRC60-63 degrees.
- Double Edged: One side of Japanese hand saw is 17 TPI for cutting hardwood, and the other side is 14 TPI for cutting softwood. Also can seen as Rip cut and Cross cut.
- Hardened 3-Edge Teeth: The hand saw has three-sided grinding gear design, sharp edge, faster chip removal, and smoother cutting.
Dovetail saw: for controlled joinery cuts
A dovetail saw is a short, stiff-backed option for precise joinery. The cited Veritas model has a 2-by-8.5-inch blade and 22 teeth per inch; Veritas says its dozuki tooth form cuts both with and across the grain. Those details describe that model only, not every dovetail saw. Veritas Dovetail Saw Guide System
Make a controlled handsaw cut
Set up the work so it cannot shift, mark the cut clearly, and take a moment to check the blade’s path. The following approach applies to ordinary hand sawing; the exact grip and stroke depend on the saw’s design. Lie-Nielsen’s sawing instruction covers saw choice, grip, stance, and three classes of cut. Lie-Nielsen Sawing Fundamentals

- Secure and mark the work. Support the piece firmly and keep the waste side of the cut clear. Mark the line where you can see it throughout the stroke.
- Set your stance and grip. Stand so your arm can move smoothly along the cut line. Hold the handle securely without squeezing so hard that the stroke becomes stiff.
- Start the kerf gently. Place the blade on the waste side of the mark and begin with short, controlled strokes. Avoid pushing hard to make the teeth bite.
- Follow the line with steady strokes. Once the kerf is established, use a comfortable stroke and keep the blade aligned. If it begins to wander, ease off and correct gradually; forcing or twisting it can widen the cut.
- Support the offcut. As the cut nears completion, prevent the waste from breaking away and tearing the edge. Finish with lighter strokes.
Practice on scrap of similar thickness before attempting a visible or close-fitting cut. The purpose is to develop control of the starting kerf, alignment, and finish for the particular saw and material.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a guide only if the saw and stock are compatible
A guide can help maintain a square cut or repeat an angle, but it cannot make an incompatible saw fit. Veritas’s right-angle guide is specified for workpieces 1/4 to 1 inch thick and backless saws with approximately 0.005 inch or less tooth set. Check the guide’s product details against your saw and stock before using it. Veritas Right-Angle Saw Guide

Common problems and corrections
- The cut starts off the mark: restart with shorter, lighter strokes and check that the blade is angled to establish the kerf where intended.
- The blade wanders: reduce pressure, keep the stroke aligned with the cut, and correct gradually instead of twisting the blade.
- The surface gets marked during a ryoba crosscut: be aware that its opposite tooth row can contact the work during deep or long cuts; consider whether another saw better suits that cut.
- A guide does not fit: verify the saw’s tooth set, whether it is backless, and the workpiece thickness against the specific guide’s compatibility details.
