Landscaping a Steep Hill: Plants That Transform a Sloped Yard

A successful steep-slope planting starts with the site: map runoff, sun, soil, and moisture, then use a locally suited mix and protect bare ground as roots establish.

The best planting for a steep hill is a layered mix chosen for your local climate, slope position, sun, soil, and drainage—not a single groundcover expected to work everywhere. First identify where water flows and which areas stay dry or wet; then combine locally suitable plants with temporary soil protection while roots establish. Planting can help protect the surface, but deep gullies, concentrated runoff, or structural concerns call for site-specific help.

Assess the hill before choosing plants

Start by mapping the slope, not by buying a plant list. Note where roof, driveway, or upslope water enters; where it exits; and where you see bare patches, runnels, or gullies. Record sun and shade, soil texture, and how moisture changes from the top to the foot of the hill. Upper areas often drain quickly, while the bottom can remain wetter.

Slope is the vertical rise divided by the horizontal run. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offers these practical categories, reviewed March 2026; they are planting guidance, not engineering standards:

  • Less than 5%: generally few special slope-planting considerations.
  • Around 8–16%: moderately steep.
  • 20% or greater: steep.
  • Approximately 30% or greater: generally too steep to mow.
  • About 50%: often considered the steepest slope that can support plant growth.

These thresholds help describe the site, but they do not establish whether a particular hill is stable or safe to work on.

What plants grow on a steep hill?

Use a mix of locally appropriate grasses, groundcovers, perennials, and woody plants with different heights and root forms. A layered planting covers more of the surface and can help slow raindrops and runoff. Iowa State Extension lists options such as little bluestem, switchgrass, prairie dropseed, creeping phlox, wild ginger, Solomon’s seal, and Christmas fern for different light conditions. Its palette includes non-native plants, so check a candidate’s local invasive status before buying.

Compare options by more than their ability to spread. Colorado State University Extension notes that no single groundcover fits every landscape and recommends vigorous growth and extensive roots for erosion control on steep slopes. Check each plant’s regional fit, mature spread, maintenance needs, and establishment speed. Fast-spreading plants may need containment, and groundcovers still require care and weeding.

What can I plant on a sunny hillside?

Choose plants for the site’s region and soil as well as its exposure. University of Maryland Extension’s examples are for Maryland conditions, not nationwide prescriptions:

  • Butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa): suited to excellent drainage, but slow to grow.
  • Hairy beardtongue (Penstemon hirsutus): suited to hot, rocky, dry sites in Maryland’s Piedmont and Mountain areas; Maryland Extension does not recommend it for the Coastal Plain.
  • Gray goldenrod: listed for poor, dry soil.
  • Virginia wildrye: described as quick-germinating, deer-resistant, and present through winter.

Use these as examples of how conditions narrow the choices, then verify native range and suitability with an extension service or native-plant source in your area.

What grows on a shady slope under trees?

For shaded Maryland slopes, University of Maryland Extension offers examples matched to different moisture conditions:

  • White wood aster (Eurybia divaricata): spreads by rhizomes in mesic-to-dry soil.
  • Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides): suited to moist, well-drained through dry conditions.
  • Golden groundsel: suited to wet or moist soil, such as the foot of a slope.
  • Wild hydrangea: naturally grows on steep slopes and cliffs.

On wooded slopes, limit digging around tree roots. Maryland Extension recommends small plugs or quart-sized plants rather than large plants for this reason.

How do I stop soil washing down a hill?

Deal with concentrated water first

Trace runoff from roofs, paving, and higher ground before planting. Iowa State Extension describes redirecting excess surface water at the top of a slope and planting along contour lines to slow flow. Mississippi State Extension advises retaining or creating drainage channels where water naturally concentrates. As Robert F. Brzuszek, Assistant Extension Professor in Landscape Architecture at Mississippi State, puts it: “Water naturally follows the lowest and easiest course, so it is best to retain or even create permanent drainage channels on steep slopes.”

Do not expect plants alone to absorb damaging, concentrated flows. If water is eroding a channel or crossing the slope with force, get local advice on drainage before disturbing the area.

Keep the ground covered while plants establish

Preserve existing vegetation and roots where feasible. Arrange new plants in staggered groups or contour-following rows rather than leaving exposed strips running downhill. On bare areas, a temporary erosion-control blanket, mat, or wattle can protect the surface while plants take root; it is not a fix for severe drainage or slope-stability problems.

Iowa State Extension recommends installing a blanket promptly after planting and pinning it tightly against the soil. A loose blanket can lift as plants germinate. Jute and coir are biodegradable blanket materials. Follow the product’s installation directions and use a suitable material for the site.

How should I water and maintain a planted slope?

  1. Water at low volume. Drip irrigation, soaker hoses, or another low-volume system can reduce runoff compared with applying water rapidly over the surface.
  2. Pause if water runs downhill. If watering starts moving soil or flowing across the surface, stop and let the water soak in before resuming.
  3. Weed during establishment. New plants need time to fill in, and weeds can compete with them. Groundcovers are not automatically maintenance-free.
  4. Watch for changing erosion. Check after heavy rain for new runnels, gullies, or exposed soil, and adjust drainage or protection if the flow pattern changes.

When should I get site-specific help?

Ask a qualified local professional to assess deep or expanding gullies, persistent concentrated flows, or concerns about slope stability. Retaining walls involve more than choosing a height or material: Mississippi State Extension notes that large walls require proper equipment, expertise, and drainage, and advises checking local ordinances and building codes. Requirements vary by location, so do not treat general planting guidance as a design for drainage work or a retaining structure.
