If your LG Inverter Direct Drive washer displays an error, start with the code and the exact model—not a guess that the inverter motor has failed. LG error meanings and controls vary by model. Check the model label and use the matching owner’s manual before trying button sequences or model-specific procedures. The LG support guidance cited here is for U.S. models; confirm instructions for your washer and region.
Before troubleshooting: identify the washer and work safely
Find the full model number on the washer’s label and consult its owner’s manual. Front-load and top-load machines can have different access panels, filters, cycles, and controls, and an error code by itself does not identify a failed motor or control board.
- Disconnect power before cleaning an inlet filter or doing any inspection that requires access near electrical components.
- Before opening a front-load pump-filter access area, prepare a shallow pan or towels. Water left inside may be hot; let it cool before draining.
- Stop if a hose, connection, or component appears damaged, or if the washer leaks. Use LG service guidance rather than attempting an uncertain repair.
Washer will not drain (OE)
LG says an OE code means the washer cannot drain water properly. On a front-load model, possible causes include a kinked or clogged drain hose, a clogged pump filter, a frozen hose, a blocked household drain, or excessive suds. On a top-load model, LG says OE can appear when the washer cannot drain within 13 minutes. The time threshold and controls should be confirmed for the specific model.
Check the drain path first
- Inspect the drain hose for kinks, pinching, blockage, or freezing. For a top-loader, also check that the hose is not trapped behind the washer.
- Check whether the household drain is blocked. Do not force the washer to run if water is backing up or leaking.
- For a top-load model, try a SPIN ONLY cycle if the manual provides that option.
Clean an accessible front-load pump filter
- Switch off and unplug the washer. Open the lower access area using the instructions for your model.
- Place a shallow pan beneath the small drain hose, then drain the remaining water. Allow hot water to cool before handling it.
- Remove the pump filter, clear debris, and clean it with a soft-bristle brush.
- Reinstall the filter securely, close the access area, and run a tub-clean cycle as directed by LG for the cited front-load guidance.
LG recommends cleaning the front-load drain-pump filter at least once a month. If the filter is clear but OE persists, excessive suds may interfere with pumping; reduce detergent and use detergent appropriate for the washer. If the pump does not operate or the code returns, arrange service rather than replacing a part based on the code alone.

Washer will not fill (IE)
IE indicates that the washer did not fill adequately within the specified time. Check the water supply before assuming a component has failed.
- Confirm the water supply is on and the taps are fully open.
- Check that the supply hoses are connected and are not bent, pinched, or pressed behind the washer.
- For a top-load model, clean the inlet filters if the manual’s procedure allows it: turn off the faucet, disconnect power, detach the hose, clean the filter, and reinstall it before reconnecting the supply.
- Check for freezing in cold conditions. A frozen supply hose can restrict water flow.
LG says damaged inlet hoses should be replaced; verify that replacement hoses match the washer’s model and connections. On the top-load setup covered by LG’s guidance, inserting the drain hose more than 4 inches (10 cm) into the drainpipe can cause siphoning. Confirm the correct installation for your model in its manual. If these checks do not clear IE, contact LG service.

Washer will not spin (LE)
LG’s LE guidance describes motor strain from an overloaded load or a foreign object caught in the tub as possible causes of a failed spin. LE alone does not establish that the inverter motor, stator, or control board needs replacement.
- Turn the washer off and unplug it for five minutes.
- Reduce the load and inspect for visible coins or other foreign objects that can be removed safely.
- For heavy items or large blankets, LG suggests using the bedding cycle if your model offers it.
If LE remains, unplug the washer and contact LG service rather than diagnosing or replacing motor components yourself.

Other codes and an unbalanced load
LG’s top-load code overview includes IE for inlet, OE for outlet, UE for unbalance, dE for door, tE for temperature sensor, PE for pressure sensor, FE for overfill, PF for power failure, and CL for control lock, among others. Codes vary by model, so use the manual’s definition and procedure for the exact washer.
A separate LG-hosted troubleshooting guide for an unidentified model family says UE may follow a small or unbalanced load and suggests adding similar items or rearranging the load. Because that guide does not establish which model family it applies to, check your manual before following that advice.

When to stop and request service
Use user-maintenance checks for visible hose obstructions, an accessible filter, or load balance. Seek LG service if an error persists after the model-appropriate checks, the drain pump does not operate, a hose or connection is damaged, or the washer leaks. Do not choose a replacement part until compatibility with the full model number is confirmed.
