1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBeautiful baseboards and chair rails start with careful layout, not the saw. Measure each wall separately, check the floor and wall lines, choose trim that suits the room, and dry-fit every joint before fastening. Because floors, walls and corners vary, fitting the moulding to the room matters more than relying on nominal measurements alone.
Plan the trim, measure the room and choose materials
Sketch the room and label each wall section. Record its length, doors, outside corners, board endings and any places where two lengths must join. Measure every wall independently at least twice; do not assume opposite walls are identical. Add extra stock for corner cuts and mistakes. The Home Depot also recommends bringing boards into the room a few days before installation to acclimate, locating studs and painting boards before installation. The Home Depot’s baseboard installation guide
Baseboards may be a single board or combine a main board with optional cap and shoe moulding. The Home Depot describes common baseboard heights as 3 1/2 to 6 inches; treat that as a general range, not a rule. Shoe moulding can help cover the transition when retrofitting or adding new flooring. Choose a profile and height that fit the room and existing trim.
Chair rail profiles and dimensions vary. As one product example—not an industry standard—a Lowe’s listing for painted MDF chair rail specifies 9/16-inch thickness, 1 5/8-inch width and 12-foot length; listing details and availability can change. Lowe’s product listing

Gather tools for the number and type of cuts
A tape measure, level or laser level, stud finder, fasteners, filler, sandpaper and paint or stain cover the basic layout and finishing work. For cuts, use a miter saw or a hand saw with a miter box; a coping saw is useful for inside baseboard corners. A powered saw is convenient for many cuts, while a miter box is a simpler manual option identified by The Home Depot as economical. Use tools according to their manufacturers’ instructions, and wear eye and hearing protection with power tools. The Home Depot baseboard guide · Lowe’s chair rail guide
Set level reference lines before cutting
Baseboards: account for an uneven floor
Check the floor with a level before establishing the baseboard reference. If it varies, use the low point to set a consistent reference so the top edge of the trim reads level around the room. A level reference may leave a varying gap at the floor; shoe moulding can cover a small transition where appropriate. Do not simply follow a sloping floor if doing so makes the top of the baseboard visibly uneven. The Home Depot’s installation guide

Chair rail: choose a height for the room
Chair rail height is a design starting point, not a universal standard. Lowe’s gives 32–42 inches from the floor or one-third of the wall’s total height as typical placement; This Old House suggests 36 inches in a discussion of wainscoting. These are alternative rules of thumb, not a fixed code. Compare them against the room’s proportions, existing trim and sightlines, then choose a height that looks balanced. Mark the chosen height at several points and connect the marks with a level or laser line. Lowe’s chair rail installation guide · This Old House on wainscoting
Cut and dry-fit each joint
Measure the actual wall section before each cut and check how the moulding sits in position. Nominal 90-degree room corners and 45-degree saw settings are only starting points: corners may not be square. Dry-fit the pieces and adjust them to the wall instead of forcing a poor fit. For long runs, plan where a joint will land before cutting so it falls in a sensible, less conspicuous place.

Inside baseboard corners: cope or miter
A coped joint is a reliable choice for an inside corner, particularly with wood trim that may expand and contract. Install one board square into the corner. On the mating board, cut a bevel to reveal the profile, then follow that profile with a coping saw, angling the cut away from the back. Fit the shaped edge over the face of the first board and refine it until the joint closes. This Old House says coped joints are less likely to open as wood moves. This Old House’s baseboard guide
An inside miter is another option, but it can require more finishing if the corner is not square or the joint does not close neatly. In either case, test the fit before fastening; caulk should not be used to disguise a badly fitted joint. The Home Depot’s baseboard guide

Outside baseboard corners and long-run joints
For an outside baseboard corner, cut opposing miters and check the fit in place before fastening. For long chair rail runs where stock ends meet, Lowe’s recommends opposing 45-degree scarf joints rather than a simple end-to-end seam. Fit the joint to the actual wall, and place it thoughtfully—into a stud when possible. The Home Depot baseboard guide · Lowe’s chair rail guide
Finish exposed chair rail ends
Where a chair rail ends openly at a wall, a small return can give the profile a neat termination. This Old House describes making the return from a mating mitered offcut. Dry-fit this small piece carefully so the visible profile meets cleanly. This Old House’s wainscoting guide

Fasten the trim and finish small gaps
Locate studs before fastening, and place nails into studs where appropriate—especially at planned joints. Keep each board aligned with its reference line as you secure it. Follow the fastener or nailer manufacturer’s directions and avoid forcing a joint shut with fasteners.
Fill nail holes with suitable filler and sand smooth. Use paintable caulk for small gaps where the material and finish call for it; it can soften minor seams at a wall, not correct an inaccurate cut. Prime and paint unfinished baseboards before installation where practical, as Lowe’s recommends, then touch up as needed after fastening. Finish other trim with paint or stain suited to the chosen material. Lowe’s baseboard guide · Lowe’s chair rail guide
