Leederville Oval—now officially called Sullivan Logistics Stadium—has completed the turf and lighting upgrades needed to support more evening and broadcast-ready football. That makes future AFL and AFLW fixtures possible, but it does not mean an AFL men’s game has been scheduled there. The completed project positions the ground as a potential smaller-venue option alongside Optus Stadium, not a confirmed replacement for it.
Is Sullivan Logistics Stadium the same as Leederville Oval?
Yes. Sullivan Logistics Stadium is the current name for Leederville Oval, a football ground in Leederville, Perth. The City of Vincent identifies East Perth and Subiaco as the venue’s home clubs. Official sources use both the current name and the former name, so “Sullivan Logistics Stadium (formerly Leederville Oval)” is the clearest first reference.
What was upgraded?
Major works began on 21 October 2024 and were completed before the 2025 WAFL season, according to the State Government’s 27 April 2025 completion announcement. The project included a renewed playing surface, irrigation, broadcast-quality lighting, replacement goal posts and in-ground sleeves, a boundary fence, above-ground dugouts, and synthetic grass along the western boundary.
The City of Vincent’s stadium project page says the turf renewal involved removing about 300 mm of soil, installing new soil and adding in-ground irrigation intended to improve water efficiency and reduce groundwater use.

Lighting levels listed by the City
| Use | Lighting level |
|---|---|
| Club training | 200 lux |
| Club games | 500 lux |
| Televised games | 1,000 lux |
These levels are published on the City’s stadium page, which also says the lights can be dimmed for community use when matches or events are not taking place. The new lighting supports night WAFL and WAFLW matches as well as broadcast requirements; the State says it also enables AFLW, pre-season AFL and other AFL matches in future.
Will Leederville Oval host AFL games?
The upgrades have made the venue capable of accommodating more elite fixtures, but the official announcements cited here do not confirm a specific future AFL men’s match at Sullivan Logistics Stadium. The State describes the upgrades as enabling future AFL matches, while the City says the venue could potentially host AFL competitions. Those statements describe capability and possibility, not an allocated fixture.

At the 2025 completion announcement, Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti described the venue as a Tier 2 ground capable of attracting more WAFL, WAFLW, AFL and AFLW games. That is the State’s stated ambition for the upgraded venue; it is not a published match schedule.
What does “local alternative to Optus Stadium” mean?
The City’s project advocacy presents Sullivan Logistics Stadium as a potential tier-two ground suited to smaller crowds, with a central location, town-centre proximity and transport connections. The idea is to provide another venue for selected fixtures, including women’s football and potentially other AFL events, rather than to suggest that it can take over Optus Stadium’s role for every match.

- Advance Pin Grip AFL Grade 1 Rubber Synthetic
The City has not published a directly comparable capacity, event operating-cost figure or spectator-experience assessment alongside its case for the project. The record crowd cited on its project advocacy page was more than 16,000 at the 2022 WAFL Grand Final; that is an attendance record for that event, not a statement of the ground’s capacity. The mayor’s 2024 description of a “local alternative” and possible AFL Gather Round matches was a goal expressed during the funding-announcement period, not confirmation of future allocations.
How was the project funded?
The State Government reported a total project cost of $5.2 million in its 2025 announcement. Its published funding breakdown was:

- ALL-WEATHER MATCH BALL – Made to provide an impressive level of performance during wet-weather Aussie Rules football matches, this AFL game ball’s outer panels are manufactured from synthetic leather. This high-quality material creates an AFL game ball which will not absorb liquids, making it suitable for use on water logged pitches.
- FOAM AND COTTON BACKING – To help this ball maintain its shape and size during intense AFL matches, this ball’s outer panels are backed with multiple layers of polyester and cotton canvas. These hard-wearing components work together to ensure your AFL match ball remains within official sizing regulations.
- ELITE TEXTURE GRIP – Players will not struggle to keep a hold of this AFL match ball thanks to its elite texture grip. This textured panelling ensures the number of times players surrender possession during competitive Aussie Rules football matches is significantly reduced.
- HI-TECH LATEX BLADDER – Once inflated to an air pressure level between 9 – 10 PSI, this Aussie Rules match ball will retain air for an impressive level of time thanks to its hi-tech latex bladder. This hard-wearing component greatly reduces the number of times you need to pump this game ball up throughout the season.
- 100% HAND STITCHED – To negate the risk of potential panel separation, this AFL Football’s stitching is done by hand. This premium finish creates a tightly-bound Aussie Rules football which will maintain a consistent ball flight regardless of how many times it is used.

The AFL’s 26 July 2026 announcement confirms that Perth will host AAMI AFL Origin against South Australia at Optus Stadium in February 2027 and against Victoria in 2029. Adelaide Oval is set to host the 2028 match. That Origin schedule confirms Optus Stadium as the Perth venue for those events; it does not determine which other AFL or AFLW fixtures might be allocated to Sullivan Logistics Stadium.
