Those are different symptoms, and without the mower model and engine, “loses power” is not enough to identify a fault or recommend a part.
Identify the mower and engine first
Find the mower’s model and serial information, then use the operator manual for that exact equipment. John Deere’s US Manuals & Training resource provides operator and technical manuals and parts catalogs. The model and engine matter: instructions and specifications from another Deere mower may not apply.
Do not buy an air filter, spark plug, fuel filter or other part based only on a report that the mower loses power uphill. The symptom does not establish what has failed or which parts fit.
Separate engine bogging from reduced travel speed
From a safe position and under the conditions allowed by the operator manual, pay attention to what changes when the mower has difficulty climbing:

- Engine bogging: the engine note drops, it stumbles, or it stalls under load.
- Reduced travel speed: the mower moves more slowly, but the engine continues to sound steady.
This distinction helps describe the problem, but it does not diagnose it. The available John Deere guidance does not determine the cause for an unidentified mower. Do not test on a steep slope or run the mower in an enclosed space; follow the manual’s safety instructions.
If the engine runs rough, follow the exact manual
John Deere’s service guidance for a specific mower says to consult that manual’s troubleshooting section if the engine is hard to start or runs rough. It directs owners to contact a John Deere dealer if the listed checks do not correct performance. This guidance is tied to that manual, so use it only if it matches your equipment rather than treating it as a universal diagnosis.

That same service page describes checking engine oil on level ground and warns against overfilling. A separate Deere operator-manual page includes before-use checks for engine oil, coolant if equipped, and cleaning air intake screens. These are model-specific instructions: apply them only if the manual is for your mower, and follow its stated procedure.

If the correct manual’s troubleshooting checks do not restore performance, or the symptom remains unclear, contact a John Deere dealer for diagnosis. When describing the issue, give the mower’s model and serial information and say whether engine speed drops or only travel speed changes. That helps keep diagnosis and any parts recommendation tied to the actual machine.
