PerthNow reported on 5 June 2025 that council backed city officers’ recommendation to refuse removal and work with Masonic Care WA on upkeep. The report describes a planning and maintenance dispute; it does not establish that the tree caused an injury or that an independent assessment found it safe or dangerous.
Why residents and the village manager sought removal
PerthNow reported that residents had raised concerns since presenting a petition with 63 signatures to council in May 2024. They said branches and large nuts fell frequently and created hazards along walking routes, including routes used by residents with walking aids.
Masonic Care WA, which manages the village, also requested removal and offered to pay for removal and replacement. Its letter to the city described falling debris as a trip hazard and said pedestrian access had sometimes been restricted. Resident Greg Green told council that the tree’s proximity to units presented a physical hazard and contributed to residents’ stress and anxiety. Those are reported concerns and accounts, not independently measured safety or health findings.
Why council chose to retain the tree
According to PerthNow, the village’s 2016 development approval required the tuart to be retained, and the city classified it as significant under its policy. The article also reported that three other significant trees were removed to make way for the development.

City officers recommended refusing the removal request. They said removing the tree would reduce amenity and canopy coverage, and suggested exploring regular pruning by a qualified professional instead. Council backed the recommendation and supported working with Masonic Care WA on upkeep. The exact wording of the formal motion and any assigned maintenance responsibilities are not established in the available report.
Mayor Albert Jacob, whom PerthNow identified as a former arborist contracted to the City of Joondalup, said: “In my professional opinion, this tuart tree is quite a specimen. With more care and maintenance, it will have a long life, develop nesting hollows, and in good conscience I can’t support its removal.”

What is reported about the tree’s condition and size
PerthNow described the tree as about 18 metres tall, with a trunk about one metre in diameter and a canopy extending about 15 metres. The article attributed an age of more than 40 years and a “good health” assessment to an arborist report commissioned by the applicants. That report expected regular maintenance and pruning to improve the tree’s condition and reduce the risk of falling branches. These are findings and expectations attributed to the applicants’ commissioned report, not an independent inspection reported in the available account.

What residents can do about a tree-maintenance concern
The City of Joondalup directs people reporting street-tree maintenance issues, fallen branches or tree-removal requests to its tree maintenance and removal service page. The Corinthian Court dispute concerns a tree on a retirement-village site, so the city’s street-tree reporting process should not be assumed to govern this particular tree. Residents or site managers can clarify responsibility with the relevant property manager and the city. Any pruning should be assessed and carried out by a qualified professional, rather than treated as a do-it-yourself task.
