The documented options include a model-specific knife-setting gauge, a magnetic jig, and a dial indicator on a stable holder. Do not treat them as interchangeable: the dial-indicator procedure described by WOOD Magazine is specifically for cutterheads with jack screws.
What the jig is meant to set
The reference is the outfeed table: the knife’s cutting edge should align with it when the knife is at the top of its rotation. A knife set too high or unevenly may affect the cut. The Grizzly G0452/P/Z manual warns that loose or improperly set knives can become dangerous projectiles or damage the machine; use the current manual for your exact jointer to confirm the required setting and procedure.
A jig is a way to hold or measure that reference while adjusting a knife. It does not establish one universal setting method for every jointer. Knife design, cutterhead construction, and the manufacturer’s directions determine which approach is appropriate.
Compare the three documented approaches
| Approach | How it works | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Dial indicator and holder | WOOD Magazine describes zeroing an indicator against the outfeed table, then using it to bring a knife edge to that reference on a jack-screw cutterhead. | Confirm the cutterhead has jack screws, the holder is stable, the contact tip is suitable, and the machine manual permits the method. |
| Model-specific knife-setting gauge | The Grizzly G0452/P/Z manual describes a gauge whose outer legs rest on the cutterhead while its middle pad just touches the knife. The manual also lists the Woodstock Jointer Pal (W1212) as an accessory. | Check exact model compatibility, contact points, and the adjustment sequence in the jointer’s manual. The cited manual establishes relevance for the specified Grizzly models, not compatibility with other machines or current product availability. |
| Magnetic jig | WoodBin describes aligning a magnetic jig to a knife at top dead center and using it to hold the knife at the outfeed-table plane while tightening. | Check that the jig contacts the cutterhead and knife as intended, that its setup marks are understood, and that the machine instructions support its use. |
The available descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison or establish that one approach is universally more accurate or safer. A dial indicator for jointer knives is a task-enabling tool for the documented jack-screw method; a magnetic or model-specific jig still needs to suit the actual cutterhead and knife design.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Fits 4"-8" Jointers & Planers】Designed for cutter heads from approx. 2-9/16" to 3-1/8" in diameter. To check fit, measure your cutter head diameter before ordering — the range covers common 4" to 8" benchtop and stationary machines.
- 【Magnetic Feet Hold Each Knife in Place】Magnets on the jig feet grip the cutter head and hold the fresh knife at a consistent height while you tighten the gib screws — hands free, no slipping, no lifting.
- 【More Consistent Than Straightedge Setups】Instead of balancing a straightedge and eyeballing each edge, the jig references off the cutter head itself, helping all knives sit at the same height — a key step toward smooth, even planing results.
- 【Steel Construction, Workshop-Ready】Built with a steel frame for everyday shop use. Bar dimensions: 5-7/8" long x 7/16" thick; max extended width 6-3/8"; round rod diameter 1/4" — sized to span common cutter heads without flex.
- 【Check Before You Order】This jig is sized for cutter heads between approx. 2-9/16" and 3-1/8" in diameter — machines outside this range will need a different setter. Wipe the magnetic feet clean of dust and chips before each use to keep the grip strong.
Dial-indicator procedure for a jack-screw cutterhead
The following sequence reflects the method described by WOOD Magazine. Apply it only when your cutterhead has jack screws and your jointer’s manual allows this approach; it is not a general procedure for other cutterhead designs.
- Disconnect the jointer from power before adjustment.
- Remove the knives and clean the knives, gibs, and cutterhead slots.
- Place the knives below outfeed-table height and snug the gib bolts.
- Set the indicator from the outfeed table and zero it at that reference.
- Use the jack screws to bring the knife to the zero reference along its length.
- Tighten the gib bolts gradually in the sequence specified by the method and machine instructions.
- Recheck knife height after tightening. Repeat the adjustment and check for each remaining knife.
Rechecking matters because tightening can change a knife’s position. If you cannot maintain a stable indicator reference or the knife does not respond as expected to its jack screws, stop and consult the instructions for the machine rather than transferring this method to a different design.

Using a model-specific gauge or magnetic jig
Model-specific gauge
For the Grizzly G0452/P/Z example, the manual’s jig uses the cutterhead as its seating reference: the outer legs sit on the cutterhead and the middle pad just touches the knife. That description is specific to the documented gauge and models. Check the current manual for your jointer and verify any gauge’s fit before relying on it. The manual’s accessory listing of the Woodstock Jointer Pal, model W1212, does not confirm present availability or fit on other machines.
Magnetic jig
In WoodBin’s account of the Magna-Set, the jig is aligned to a knife at top dead center and magnets hold the knife at the outfeed-table plane while it is tightened. This is a description of that jig’s setup, not proof that every magnetic jig fits every cutterhead. Confirm contact, alignment marks, and the manufacturer’s adjustment instructions before using this design.

- One of the nicest knife setting jigs available
- Prevent end snipe on your wood pieces
- Polished steel rods hold solid brass bars in position
Safety checks before returning the jointer to service
- Disconnect power before inspection or knife setting, as directed by the Grizzly manual and the WOOD Magazine procedure.
- Follow the machine-specific tightening sequence and verify each knife is secure and properly adjusted before operation.
- Do not assume a jig’s fit or adjustment method carries over to another jointer model or cutterhead.
- If using an indicator with a hard, flat tip, lower it gently onto the knife. The author of Irrelevant Tech’s homemade jig description notes that dropping such a tip can damage a cutting edge; that caution does not replace the machine manual.
Sources and limits
The procedures and design examples above are drawn from WOOD Magazine’s jack-screw method, a homemade indicator-jig description from Irrelevant Tech, the Grizzly G0452Z manual as surfaced through Manualzz, and Bill Kovalick’s WoodBin account of the Magna-Set. The Grizzly copy is not an official current manual, so confirm model-specific instructions against the current manual from the manufacturer. WoodBin’s account and the historical product references do not establish present retail availability, current pricing, or cross-model compatibility. A patent document on magnetic cutter-blade alignment provides design background, not evidence that a product is currently sold: US4854051A, “Jig for aligning cutter blades”.
