A suburban yard can be both attractive and useful: edible plants can share space with ornamentals, native flowers can support pollinators, and a rain garden can turn a runoff concern into a planted feature. Start with your site and priorities—not a one-size-fits-all plan—because regional climate, sun, moisture, soil, available space, and the time you want to spend maintaining the landscape all affect what will work.

How do you plan a suburban homestead landscape?

Begin by deciding what you want the yard to do. Food production, pollinator habitat, and runoff management are distinct goals, though a thoughtful layout can combine them. Then map the conditions that will shape plant choices: sunny and shaded areas, wet and dry spots, soil conditions, regional climate, and the space available.

Use those observations to choose plants for each location. A native plant is not automatically suited to every part of your yard; species adapted to sun may struggle in shade, and moisture needs matter too. OSU Extension’s guidance on matching regional native plants to site conditions is a useful starting point, but its plant information is regional rather than universal: OSU Extension’s native plant collection and guidance on choosing the right plant for the right place.

How can you make a suburban yard more productive?

Blend edible plants into ornamental beds

Food plants do not have to be confined to a hidden vegetable plot. Edible landscaping means using food-producing plants as part of a residential landscape. You can incorporate them into existing garden beds or design an entire landscape around edible plants, as described in OSU Extension’s edible landscaping guidance.

Consider the appearance and growing conditions of each plant as well as its harvest. Leafy greens such as lettuce and kale are examples of edible plants that can tolerate some shade, but their success still depends on local conditions. Place edible plants where their light and moisture needs fit, and consider whether they will be easy to reach for harvesting and care.

Choose the purpose and placement before planting

A small planting area can serve a clear household purpose, whether that is herbs near an entry, vegetables in a sunny bed, or fruiting plants worked into a border. Decide how much space you want to devote to food and how it should look alongside the rest of the yard. The available guidance supports edible planting as a landscape approach, not a promise of a particular yield or financial return.

What native plants and flowers can support pollinators?

Choose locally appropriate plants for the site

Native plants can support local biodiversity, but the right species depend on where you live and the conditions in the planting area. OSU Extension’s plant and gardening resources offer regional guidance and emphasize matching a plant’s needs to sun and shade. If you are outside the Pacific Northwest, use your local extension service or another regional authority for plant lists rather than treating Pacific Northwest recommendations as universal.

Plan for flowers across the growing season

A pollinator planting is more useful when it offers variety and a sequence of blooms, rather than relying on one kind of flower at one time of year. OSU Extension’s pollinator guidance recommends diverse flowering plants across flower forms and plant families, with blooms from early spring through autumn. It also advises providing nesting and overwintering places and grouping plants rather than relying on isolated specimens. The guide focuses on the Pacific Northwest, so use its design principles with locally suitable species: OSU Extension’s pollinator garden guide.

Convert part of a lawn if that fits your goals

You can consider replacing a section of conventional lawn with perennial pollinator beds, adding early-season bulbs, or managing turf to tolerate flowering plants. Choose the approach that fits the yard’s appearance and maintenance needs. A regional native wildflower seed mix may be one option, but check the species list and confirm that the plants suit your region and site; a generic mix is not necessarily native or appropriate.

Can a rain garden fit into a suburban landscape?

It may, particularly where managing precipitation runoff is a goal and the site is suitable. A rain garden can add a planted landscape feature while addressing runoff; native plants can also contribute habitat value. Penn State Extension describes these benefits in its rain garden guidance.

Whether a rain garden is appropriate—and how it should be designed—depends on the specific property. The cited guidance does not establish universal construction dimensions, infiltration requirements, or siting rules. Before building, consult current local extension or municipal stormwater guidance for site-specific design and construction details.
