For a Jurassic Park-inspired backyard, build the look with layers of fern fronds, bold cycads, fan-shaped ginkgo leaves, dramatic conifers, or oversized Gunnera foliage. These are living modern plants or relatives that evoke ancient landscapes—not a literal recreation of one Jurassic ecosystem. The right choices depend on your climate, light, moisture, available space, and willingness to manage the plants.

What gives a backyard a Jurassic look?

Think in contrasts: low, feathery foliage beneath sculptural, cone-bearing plants; fan-shaped leaves beside evergreen needles; and, where conditions allow, a few oversized leaves as a focal point. The Natural History Museum places ferns and cycads among ground cover during the Jurassic, alongside ginkgoes and conifers such as monkey puzzle and cypress. It dates the Jurassic Period to 201–145 million years ago. These broad plant groups help suggest an ancient landscape, but present-day plants are not interchangeable with the fossil species that once lived.

Botanical gardens use similar combinations to create prehistoric-themed displays. San Francisco Zoo & Gardens includes Gunnera in its Prehistoric Garden, while Bloedel Reserve uses it in a Jurassic Garden with grasses, conifers, and herbaceous perennials. Those examples show a design direction, not a planting recipe for every backyard.

Five plant options for a prehistoric-inspired garden

1. Ferns for a lush, layered border

Ferns bring the soft, spreading fronds that make a shaded bed or container planting feel dense and green. Layering several sizes can create a ground-level backdrop for a more upright focal plant. The Natural History Museum suggests small Nephrolepis and Adiantum species for a miniature indoor dinosaur garden; that recommendation is for a small display, not a universal outdoor-care prescription.

For its miniature garden, the museum describes a planter, soil, small rocks, and plants, with a well-lit position out of direct sunlight and regular watering. It notes that a cycad needs more sunlight than the other plants and may do better separately. Treat these as instructions for that compact display and check the needs of the specific fern you choose.

2. Cycads for a stiff, palm-like silhouette

Cycads have rigid, often arching leaves and produce cones, giving them a strong architectural presence among softer foliage. They are cone-bearing gymnosperms, not palms. The Botanic Gardens of Sydney puts the distinction plainly: “Cycads are often mistaken for Palms, but Palms are angiosperms.” UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley dates the cycad fossil record to the early Mesozoic, about 250 million years ago.

Choose a locally suitable, legally propagated plant and confirm its eventual size and growing requirements before planting. Cycad seeds are toxic, so keep them away from children and pets. The Botanic Gardens of Sydney identifies the Natal cycad as endangered and advises buying from a reputable source; do not collect rare cycads from the wild.

3. Ginkgo for fan-shaped leaves and autumn color

Ginkgo adds a distinct texture: its fan-shaped leaves contrast with fern fronds and conifer needles, then turn yellow in autumn, according to the Natural History Museum. Because it is a tree rather than a small border plant, check its expected mature size and local suitability before choosing a planting spot.

4. Monkey puzzle or another suitable conifer for evergreen drama

A conifer can anchor a larger garden with a strong evergreen form. The Natural History Museum names monkey puzzle and cypress among Jurassic-period conifers and says monkey puzzle trees have been on Earth for around 200 million years. That long history makes the tree evocative, but does not make it right for every yard: consider local climate, mature scale, and the space available over the long term.

5. Gunnera for oversized foliage

Where local climate and planting conditions suit it, Gunnera supplies a bold focal point with exceptionally large leaves. Its use in the Prehistoric Garden at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens and the Jurassic Garden at Bloedel Reserve shows how it can contribute to this style. Check local planting guidance and the conditions the plant needs before selecting it; the garden examples do not establish that it will thrive in every region.

How to choose plants for your own yard

Start with the site, not the theme

Before buying, note the planting area’s sun exposure, moisture, soil conditions, and available room, then compare those conditions with the needs and mature size of each specific plant. The options above span small containers to tree-scale specimens, so a combination suitable for a large, mild-climate garden may not work in a compact or colder yard. UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley notes that some cycads need greenhouse care even in the San Francisco Bay Area, illustrating how regional conditions can limit a plant that might appear broadly suitable.

Keep contained or fast-spreading plants in check

Horsetail is another plant used in prehistoric-themed gardens, but it spreads readily through underground stems. The Natural History Museum describes using barriers to contain its rhizomes in its own garden. If considering horsetail, check local rules and plan for containment rather than treating it as a carefree filler.

Scale the idea to a container or a landscape

A small dinosaur-themed planter can use the museum’s miniature-display approach, with compact plants, soil, and small rocks; it is a different project from building a full backyard bed. For a larger garden, leave room for the mature tree or shrub form of any focal plant and select companions based on actual site conditions. The five options are a shortlist of visual directions, not a claim that all five coexisted in one place or will grow well together.

Other plants to consider carefully

The Natural History Museum’s prehistoric-plant examples also include Selaginella, asparagus fern, horsetail, Wollemi pine, and dawn redwood. Their inclusion in a prehistoric context does not by itself establish suitability for a particular yard. Check the requirements, mature scale, local rules, and sourcing for any candidate before planting; horsetail especially requires a containment plan.
