Installing a Rainwater Collection System: 6 Top Tips

A practical guide to planning and installing a roof-based rainwater collection system, from debris screens and first-flush diversion to tank placement and local requirements.

To install a rainwater collection system, connect a roof catchment to gutters and downspouts, screen out leaves, divert the first runoff, and route the remaining water into a covered tank. Then choose gravity or a pump for delivery. The right tank size, foundation, treatment, and permits depend on your site and how you plan to use the water.

1. Decide what the water is for and estimate demand

Start with the intended use—typically garden irrigation for a simple household setup—and estimate how much water you will need during dry periods. Then compare that demand with local rainfall and the usable area of the roof feeding the system. Tank capacity should reflect all three, as well as your budget and storage preferences; a large tank cannot make up for limited rainfall or an inadequate catchment area.

Oregon State University Extension gives a location-specific illustration: irrigating one acre through three completely dry summer months would require about 900,240 gallons. That is a worked Oregon scenario, not a sizing recommendation for a typical home garden. See Oregon State University Extension’s rainwater guidance and its tank-sizing discussion.

2. Check the roof, gutters, and downspouts

The roof is the catchment surface; gutters, downspouts, and connecting pipe carry runoff to the tank. Inspect the full route before choosing equipment. Clear branches and debris, check that gutters and downspouts are in suitable condition, and confirm that the tank can be positioned where the pipework can reach it.

RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon ECO Rain Barrel Made with 100% Recycled Plastic, Flat Back Rain Water Collection Barrel, Black
  • 50-Gallon Capacity: Provides ample storage for harvested rainwater, ideal for watering gardens, lawns, and plants.
  • Durable Construction: Made from UV-resistant polyethylene for long-lasting durability and protection from the elements. Made of 100% Recycled plastic.
  • Overflow Valve: Built-in overflow valve for managing excess water and the option to connect multiple barrels for increased storage.
  • Convenient Spigot: Easy-to-use plastic spigot for quick and efficient water retrieval.
  • Low Maintenance: Easy to install and maintain, offering a simple, sustainable solution for homeowners.

Roofing material and condition can affect water quality. Water collected for irrigation should not be assumed safe to drink.

3. Screen out leaves and larger debris

Fit a leaf screen where runoff enters the collection line, often at the downspout. Screens catch larger debris before it reaches the tank, but they need regular inspection and cleaning. A clogged screen can restrict flow, and trapped debris can harbor contaminants.

4. Divert the first runoff

A first-flush diverter sends the initial roof runoff away from storage. That first flow can carry smaller contaminants—such as dust, pollen, and animal droppings—that pass through a leaf screen. A simple design may use a PVC standpipe to collect and discharge the initial runoff, but it must be maintained so it continues to function.

The two devices do different jobs: the screen catches larger debris, while the diverter rejects the first runoff. Neither is a substitute for treatment when water is intended for potable use. Oregon State University Extension describes the first-flush diverter and maintenance considerations.

5. Choose and site the tank for its full weight

Use a durable tank that has never held toxic material. Keep it covered and opaque, screen its vents to limit insect entry, and leave access for cleaning and repairs. Before installation, plan where overflow will go; it should discharge safely away from the house foundation and septic drainfields.

Set the tank on a stable foundation designed for the filled load, not merely the empty container. Oregon State University Extension notes that a full 3,000-gallon tank weighs over 24,000 pounds. The actual tank and foundation requirements depend on the installation, so the example should not be treated as a universal foundation specification. See the Extension guidance on tank placement and weight.

6. Match delivery, treatment, and approvals to the use

For an outdoor garden system, water may be delivered by gravity if the tank outlet is high enough, or by pump when the layout or demand requires it. Indoor plumbing connections and potable-water systems are more complex: they may require additional treatment, backflow protection, professional design, and permits.

Rules depend on location. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Oregon summary says non-potable systems connected to plumbing inside a building require a permit and professional design under the referenced code, while some exterior or outdoor configurations are excepted. That is an Oregon-specific example, not a nationwide rule. Before connecting a system to plumbing—or relying on collected water for drinking—check current requirements with local building, plumbing, health, and water authorities. See the EPA’s Oregon rainwater-harvesting summary.

How the parts fit together

A basic system follows this sequence:

  1. Roof catchment collects runoff.
  2. Gutters and downspouts convey it.
  3. A leaf screen catches larger debris.
  4. A first-flush diverter routes initial runoff away from storage.
  5. A covered tank stores the collected water and directs overflow to a safe location.
  6. Gravity or a pump supplies water for the intended use.

Larger or indoor-connected systems may also need controls, treatment, and backflow protection. The more the system connects to building plumbing, the more important it is to confirm design and code requirements before installation.

Before installation: a practical checklist

  • Estimate intended water use and check local rainfall and usable roof area.
  • Inspect the roof, gutters, downspouts, and pipe route.
  • Choose screens, diverter, tank, and fittings compatible with the roof and downspout dimensions.
  • Plan a stable base, service access, screened vents, and safe overflow discharge.
  • Decide whether gravity or a pump can provide the needed delivery.
  • Check local approvals and treatment requirements, especially for indoor plumbing or potable use.
