Logging With Horses: How It Works, Equipment, and Tradeoffs

Horse logging uses a horse or team to skid felled timber to a landing. Learn about equipment, operating limits, environmental tradeoffs, and how to compare it with mechanized extraction.

Logging with horses is a selective timber-extraction method: after trees are felled, a horse or team skids logs along a planned trail to a landing, where they can be sorted, loaded, and transported. It can be useful on small woodlots or sites where machine access is difficult, but it is not automatically cheaper, more productive, or less damaging than mechanized logging. The right choice depends on terrain, skid distance, timber volume, weather, operator skill, horse availability, and how the harvest is planned.

How horse logging works

Horse logging is one part of a forestry operation, not a machinery-free alternative to logging. Trees are felled—often with chainsaws—and a horse or team pulls selected logs along skid trails toward a landing. At the landing, logs may be sorted and transferred to trucks or other equipment for transport.

A logging arch is a two-wheeled frame that lifts the front end of a log during extraction. Some operations use an arch with a team; others use a single horse to bunch logs for later forwarding. Either way, trail layout, load size, footing, and the handler’s ability to control the horse matter, particularly on slopes.

What equipment is necessary?

Equipment varies with the horse, team, terrain, and extraction method. In Jason Rutledge’s practitioner guide, the listed items include:

This is a work-system list, not a universal buying specification. Equipment must suit the animals and job, and safe use requires appropriate instruction. Harness condition and fit, along with suitable horseshoes, also need attention during ongoing work.

How much can a team pull, and how far can it skid?

There is no single load or distance figure that applies to every operation. Rutledge’s guide, which summarizes a March 2001 presentation, says his operation generally used two horses and a modern steel logging arch. In average skid conditions, the team moved about 250 board feet of hardwood—approximately 3,000 pounds—per skid. He reported lower capacity on adverse uphill skids and considerably lower production when skid distance exceeded 1,500 feet, in part because of the longer empty return. These are estimates from one practitioner’s operation, not industry-wide performance standards.

A 2025 Horse Journals profile reports horse logger Jennifer Dillman’s estimate that a team can produce about 32 tons of timber, with results varying by ground conditions, skid length, and wood size. That is also an operator estimate, not a general benchmark. Neither figure should be used as a production guarantee or as a substitute for a site-specific plan.

How steep can horses skid, and what weather limits the work?

There is no universal safe slope limit in the cited practitioner guidance. Rutledge describes uphill extraction as more constrained; snow can affect footing and control of logs moving downhill. Slopes require suitable trails, carefully managed loads, and a handler with the skill to maintain control. Conditions that are manageable for one horse, team, or route may be unsafe for another.

Deep snow, wet ground, and cold weather can also complicate work, according to the Horse Journals profile. These conditions affect footing, comfort, equipment, and the ability to control a load. A decision to work or stop should be based on conditions at the site and the judgment of experienced handlers, not a fixed snow-depth or temperature threshold.

Where horse logging can make sense

Horse logging’s maneuverability and selective approach can make it worth considering on smaller woodlands or where bringing heavy equipment through the stand is difficult or undesirable. It may help limit the need for machine access and can support a harvest focused on selected trees. That does not mean every horse-logged site has less total impact: trails, felling, extraction, and later transport still affect the forest.

A 2025 Mother Earth News overview describes horse logging as especially suited to small- and medium-sized woodlands, while noting a significant efficiency advantage for mechanized extraction in a 1,000-acre forest. That is the article’s scale comparison, not a universal acreage cutoff. Tract size is only one factor; harvest volume, terrain, access, skid distance, landing logistics, and the available crew can change the decision.

Horse logging versus mechanized extraction

The useful comparison is not simply “horse or machine.” Consider the full operation and the result the landowner needs:

Decision factor Horse logging may fit when… Mechanized extraction may fit when…
Scale and volume The work is selective or on a smaller tract, and the planned volume suits the available team and schedule. The tract or volume is large enough that higher extraction efficiency is important; the 1,000-acre comparison above is an example from a 2025 overview, not a threshold.
Terrain and access Maneuverability and limited machine access through the stand are priorities, and safe trails can be laid out. Terrain, roads, and access allow equipment to work efficiently and safely.
Harvest objective The plan calls for selective removal and careful protection of residual trees. The harvest plan and operating conditions favor mechanized handling of the intended volume.
Ground and weather Footing and trail conditions allow controlled skidding by the team. Conditions support safe machine operation and the planned extraction method.
Distance and landing Skid routes are practical for the team and connect efficiently to a landing. Longer extraction routes or high-volume movement make machine productivity more important.
People and logistics A capable horse-and-handler team is available, and timber transport and market arrangements are workable. Suitable equipment and operators are available, and the site can support their access and use.

The sources do not establish a standardized cost comparison between horse and mechanized logging. Estimate the whole job—including felling, extraction, trail work, animal or equipment care, loading, transport, and timber-market logistics—before choosing a method.

What are the environmental tradeoffs?

Selective harvesting and reduced need for heavy machine access can lower some kinds of disturbance, but the outcome depends on the operation. In a Horse Journals profile, logger Jennifer Dillman describes her experience that selective logging leaves more regeneration and causes less ground disturbance than machinery. That is an operator’s experience and opinion, not a controlled comparison proving that every horse operation has a smaller overall impact.

A 2025 Mother Earth News article also summarizes USDA hardwood research in West Virginia as finding that responsibly thinned crop trees can increase in diameter as much as three times faster than trees in natural stands. The figure is reported through that article’s summary and is not a universal result for every forest or thinning plan.

Horse logging remains a timber harvest: trees are felled, trails are used, logs are moved, and timber is transported. Its environmental performance depends on which trees are removed, trail placement, soil and weather conditions, operating skill, and what happens at the landing and beyond. Jason Rutledge’s statement that “what we leave in the forest is more important than what we take,” quoted in a 2023 PBS program, expresses a forestry commitment rather than a measurable impact standard.
