There is no single mowing height that suits every lawn. Choose a target for your grass species and local climate, then mow often enough that you remove no more than one-third of the leaf blade at a time. For many Idaho home lawns, University of Idaho Extension offers 3 inches as a useful starting point—not a universal prescription. University of Idaho Extension
Choose a target height for your grass and region
Start by identifying the grass in your lawn. Species, cultivar, growth habit, climate, season, and the level of lawn quality or maintenance you want all affect the appropriate cut. Fine, narrow-leaved grasses that grow horizontally can generally be cut shorter than coarse, upright grasses, according to UF/IFAS. Its specific height recommendations are for Florida; they should not be applied automatically elsewhere.
These regional examples show why a bare height number can mislead:
| Grass | Florida recommendation | Maryland recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Bahiagrass | 3–4 inches (UF/IFAS, Florida) | Not stated (University of Maryland Extension) |
| Bermudagrass | 0.5–1.5 inches (UF/IFAS, Florida) | 1–1.5 inches (University of Maryland Extension) |
| Centipedegrass | 1.5–2 inches (UF/IFAS, Florida) | Not stated (University of Maryland Extension) |
| St. Augustinegrass | 2.5–4 inches (UF/IFAS, Florida); only the dwarf and semi-dwarf cultivars Captiva, Delmar, and Seville are recommended at 2.5 inches; other cultivars at 3.5–4 inches | Not stated (University of Maryland Extension) |
| Zoysiagrass | 2–2.5 inches for coarse zoysiagrass (UF/IFAS, Florida) | 1.5–2.5 inches (University of Maryland Extension) |
| Tall fescue | Not stated (UF/IFAS, Florida) | 3–4 inches (University of Maryland Extension) |
| Kentucky bluegrass | Not stated (UF/IFAS, Florida) | 2.5–3.5 inches (University of Maryland Extension) |
| Fine fescue | Not stated (UF/IFAS, Florida) | 3–4 inches (University of Maryland Extension) |
The values are regional recommendations, not a single combined standard. See the full University of Maryland Extension mowing guidance and UF/IFAS guidance for the conditions behind them. In Idaho, Extension advises against mowing below 2 inches and recommends raising the height in summer; it says higher mowing encourages deeper roots and drought resistance. Use the one-third rule to know when to mow
Once you have chosen a maintained height, let the lawn grow only about halfway above that target before cutting. The practical calculation is:
Mow when the grass reaches about 1.5 times your target height.

| Target maintained height | Approximate height to mow |
|---|---|
| 2 inches | 3 inches |
| 3 inches | 4.5 inches |
| 4 inches | 6 inches |
This follows the one-third rule: remove no more than one-third of the leaf blade in a single mowing. University of Idaho and Cornell give the 3-inch target and 4.5-inch mowing trigger as an example. Cornell’s grass-cutting-height guidance also illustrates the calculation for 2- and 4-inch targets. Its example mowing intervals are estimates, not a schedule to rely on; actual growth changes with weather, moisture, fertility, species, and management.
Adjust for season, weather, and lawn stress
Frequency depends on active growth, not a fixed weekly calendar. Cool-season grasses generally grow most actively in spring and fall; warm-season grasses generally grow most actively in summer. UC IPM’s mowing guidance and University of Maryland Extension describe these seasonal patterns.

Maryland Extension advises against mowing when the lawn is wet or when growth has paused because of drought stress or hot weather above 90°F. That advice reflects its regional guidance; follow local recommendations for your conditions. During Maryland’s hottest, driest summer period, Extension advises using the highest mower setting for tall fescue and avoiding mowing fine fescue.
Bring an overgrown lawn back gradually
If the grass is much taller than your chosen target, do not cut it down to height in one pass. Removing too much leaf at once can impair root growth and stress the turf. Instead, mow more frequently, lowering the height over successive cuts while continuing to remove no more than one-third of the blade each time. UC IPM recommends gradual height reduction and more frequent mowing until the target is reached.

Check the mower’s actual cutting height
The mower’s setting may not match the height at which it actually cuts. Follow the owner’s manual, place the mower on a flat surface, and use a short ruler to check the distance from the blade to the ground, as University of Idaho Extension suggests. Turn the mower off and disconnect the spark plug before any check or adjustment involving the blade. If the mower is adjustable, use its existing height settings; choosing a mowing height does not by itself require buying a different mower.
A sharp blade makes a clean cut rather than tearing leaf tips. Cornell and Maryland Extension offer about 10 cumulative mowing hours as a rule of thumb for sharpening; treat it as maintenance guidance, not a substitute for checking blade condition.
