Joondalup Health Campus’s 102-bed Mental Health Unit won Project of the Year – New Build International at the 2025 Design in Mental Health Awards in the UK. Opened in August 2023, the facility brings adult, youth and older adult inpatient services together on a constrained site, with design priorities that include safety, privacy, passive observation and natural light.

A 102-bed facility for several inpatient cohorts
The unit officially opened in August 2023 and has 102 beds. It serves adult, youth and older adult inpatients; Joondalup Health Campus defines youth as ages 16–24 and older adults as 65 and above. Who designed the project?
Silver Thomas Hanley led the design in conjunction with Ramsay Health Care. The project’s development also included consumer input and consultation with the WA Office of the Chief Psychiatrist. North Metropolitan Health Service project information
How the design balances safety, privacy and daily use
Published design priorities describe a balance between safety and passive observation, respect for patient privacy, and access to natural light. Those are stated design aims, not evidence of measured clinical outcomes: the available project descriptions do not report a controlled evaluation or comparison of patient outcomes.
