Matagarup Bridge’s feature lighting passed its first official test on the evening of Monday, 18 June 2018, ahead of the pedestrian bridge’s opening. At the time, the bridge was still being completed and was expected to open by the end of June; the Town of Victoria Park records that it opened to the public in July 2018.

What the first lighting test showed

PerthNow reported on 19 June 2018 that the bridge lights had been officially tested for the first time the previous evening. Inclement weather did not dampen the colourful display. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti shared a time-lapse clip showing the lighting visitors to Optus Stadium might see.

The test took place while construction work was still underway. The final decking piece had been locked into place the week before, but concrete work across the walkway remained. The government hoped to open the crossing by the end of June. The bridge was a pedestrian connection between East Perth and the Optus Stadium precinct; it later opened to the public in July 2018, according to the Town of Victoria Park.

What the 2018 report said about the bridge

PerthNow described the project as a $91.5 million pedestrian bridge and reported that more than 15,000 people were expected to use it on event days to reach shuttle buses or CBD parking. Those are figures quoted in the 19 June 2018 article, not current cost or visitor counts.

How the bridge lighting is described now

Main Roads Western Australia says the feature lights turn on just after sunset and remain on until midnight. When there are no bookings, Matagarup Bridge displays varied colours, including those associated with the Noongar Six Seasons. Main Roads lists the seasonal colours as:

Main Roads’ April 2022 guidelines describe programmable lighting in the bridge arches and say the bridge and Optus Stadium lighting are managed by separate entities. Programming is coordinated where possible to support precinct events. The guidelines describe the default “showcase” program as alternating among colours from sunset to midnight and say applications should be submitted at least 72 hours ahead. For current application instructions and availability, use Main Roads’ current page rather than relying on the 2022 guidelines.

What the historical test means for visitors

The June 2018 test showed the bridge’s colourful feature lighting before the crossing opened. It was a construction-era milestone, not a description of today’s event-day visitor numbers or a guarantee of a particular current colour sequence. For the bridge’s present lighting arrangements, Main Roads is the relevant source; the Town of Victoria Park records the bridge’s July 2018 public opening.
