No. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists moldy wood among the materials not to burn. Set visibly moldy firewood aside and use clean, dry, seasoned wood instead. A moisture meter can check how wet wood is, but it cannot detect mold or make moldy wood safe to burn.

Why you should not burn moldy firewood

EPA guidance says not to burn “wet, rotted, diseased, or moldy wood.” Don’t try to burn visible mold away or treat a low moisture reading as clearance to use the wood. Choose a different load for your fireplace, stove, or outdoor fire.

Mold is common in the environment and grows where moisture is present. Mold exposure may cause allergic or irritant effects in some people, though others have no symptoms. Possible symptoms include a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes, and skin rash. These are general mold-exposure effects; the cited health guidance does not quantify the risk specifically from burning moldy firewood.

Who should be especially cautious

People with asthma or a mold allergy can have more severe reactions to mold exposure. People with chronic lung disease or weakened immunity may be at risk of lung infections. Wood smoke is a separate concern: EPA notes that people with heart or lung disease, including asthma and COPD, can be particularly sensitive to particle pollution from smoke.

How to choose and store firewood

Choose seasoned, dry wood

EPA recommends seasoning firewood for at least six months and says wood burns best at less than 20% moisture. Check a freshly split face with a firewood moisture meter if you need to assess moisture. That reading only measures moisture; it does not identify mold, and meeting EPA’s moisture recommendation does not override its advice not to burn moldy wood.

Store wood so it can dry

Keep firewood outdoors and off the ground. Cover only the top, leaving the sides open so air can circulate; covering the sides can trap moisture. These practices help keep wood dry, but inspect it before use and set aside any visibly moldy pieces.

Check conditions before an outdoor fire

For an outdoor fire, check local air quality and follow applicable restrictions. Always follow the operating instructions for your stove or other appliance. EPA’s firewood recommendations appear on its historic Burn Wise page, which the agency says stopped being updated on October 30, 2025.
