Yes—beech is good firewood when it is properly seasoned. Its density gives it strong heat potential by volume, and Utah State University Extension describes it as producing excellent coals and few sparks. The main trade-off is that beech can be difficult to split. Before burning it, check that the wood is dry: moisture readings from freshly split interiors are more useful than appearance or a calendar estimate.

How much heat does beech firewood produce?

Utah State University Extension lists beech at 27.5 million BTU per cord in its firewood table. That is a source-specific figure, not a guarantee for every cord: actual useful heat depends on the wood’s moisture, species, and how it is measured and burned. The same table describes beech as difficult to split, producing few sparks, and forming excellent coals. Utah State University Extension’s wood-heating guide explains the role of density: “A wood’s dry weight per volume, or density, is important because denser or heavier wood contains more heat per volume.”

Beech’s density helps explain why a given volume can contain substantial heat. The University of Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources notes that oak, hickory, and beech are denser than yellow-poplar and provide more heat for the same volume when seasoned properly. That comparison is about equal volumes of properly seasoned wood; it does not mean a wet beech log will outperform dry wood of another species. Kentucky’s firewood-drying guidance covers the importance of proper drying.

Is beech difficult to split?

Yes. Utah State University Extension lists beech as difficult to split. If you are buying rounds or handling your own logs, account for the added preparation. Splitting also exposes more surface area to air, which helps wood dry; Forest Research recommends splitting logs over 15 cm in diameter to assist drying.

How dry should beech firewood be?

Moisture guidance depends on the source and its context. University of Illinois Extension recommends below 20% moisture and says wetter wood produces less heat and more smoke, while adding to chimney creosote. Cornell Cooperative Extension also recommends below 20%. In the UK, Forest Research gives a usual firewood-log target of 20–25% moisture content on a wet basis. These are distinct recommendations and measurement conventions, not one universal threshold. See Illinois Extension’s firewood safety guidance, Cornell’s storage and drying advice, and Forest Research’s woodfuel guidance.

Measure the inside, not just the surface

A moisture meter is a more accurate way to check readiness than judging by appearance alone. Cornell recommends splitting a few pieces and testing the freshly exposed interior, where moisture may be higher than at the surface. End checks and a crisp sound when two pieces are knocked together can offer clues, but should not replace a measurement when you need a reliable reading.

How long does beech take to season?

There is no single beech-specific seasoning period established by the guidance cited here. General firewood recommendations vary: Illinois Extension says fresh wood usually needs at least six to nine months to reach its below-20% target, while Cornell says green wood takes at least six months to reach below 20% and may take longer in shady or damp conditions. Forest Research says thorough seasoning of logs to its 20–25% wet-basis target typically requires two years. These estimates reflect different guidance contexts; treat them as planning ranges, then verify the moisture of the wood you intend to burn.

How to dry and store beech firewood

  1. Split large pieces. Split rounds to expose more surface area; Forest Research recommends splitting logs over 15 cm in diameter to assist drying.
  2. Raise the stack and allow airflow. Keep firewood off the ground and leave space for air to circulate through and around it. Kentucky and Cornell both recommend ventilated storage.
  3. Keep rain off the top, not the sides. Cover the top of the stack while leaving the sides open. Seasoned wood can reabsorb water, so protect it from rainfall without trapping moisture around the pile.
  4. Check representative pieces before burning. Split a few logs and test their interiors with a moisture meter rather than assuming that elapsed time alone proves they are ready.

What to ask when buying beech firewood

  • Is the wood seasoned, and what moisture reading does the seller report?
  • Was moisture checked on a freshly split interior rather than only at the surface?
  • Are the pieces already split, or will you need to split the rounds yourself?
  • How was the wood stored, and was it protected from rain while remaining ventilated?

For a fair comparison with oak, hickory, or another local option, compare wood at similar moisture levels and by the same volume basis. Also consider handling and fire behavior: beech’s splitting difficulty may matter if it arrives unsplit, while its few sparks and excellent coals, as reported by Utah State University Extension, may be relevant depending on whether you use a stove or an open fireplace.
