That does not make its energy use or climate impact irrelevant, and it does not mean everyone must buy a unit. A sound defense starts with the risks of heat, then weighs cooling’s energy demands and the unequal ability to access it.
Why air-conditioning can be a health safeguard
Extreme heat can cause serious illness and death. The CDC identifies older adults, young children, pregnant people, and people with chronic conditions among those who need particular attention. Its guidance recommends using air-conditioning or finding a place that has it. The CDC says more than 700 people die from extreme heat each year in the United States; that is the figure on its heat and health guidance page, not a count attributable to any single cause.
A CDC report on a June 30–July 13, 2012 heat event across four states illustrates why access at home matters. Of 32 heat-related deaths, 22 occurred at home; the report noted that 20 of those 22 people lacked air-conditioning. Those figures describe that particular event and do not establish a nationwide estimate of deaths caused by lacking air-conditioning.
CDC guidance also points people who cannot cool their homes toward places that can: “Use air conditioning or find a location that has one by dialing 2-1-1, visiting the National Center for Healthy Housing’s Cooling Centers by State page, or by contacting your local health department or emergency management agency.” The guidance is from About Heat and Your Health, dated July 25, 2025.

- Room-to-Room Versatility: Lightweight with smooth-rolling casters, this compact AC moves effortlessly wherever cooling is needed. Perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, garages—any space up to 750 square feet
What air-conditioning can—and cannot—do
Air-conditioning provides direct cooling indoors, which can matter when outdoor heat makes a home unsafe. It is one response, not a universal prescription to purchase equipment: cooling centers and other locations with air-conditioning are options for people who cannot cool their own homes.
Fans are not always an adequate substitute. CDC guidance says indoor fans should be used only when temperatures are below 90°F; above that threshold, a fan can increase body temperature. Follow current local public-health guidance during a heat emergency rather than assuming air movement alone is sufficient.

How to think about the energy tradeoff
Cooling requires energy, and warmer weather affects demand for it. But comparisons between heating and cooling can mislead if they mix different measures. Heating may use natural gas, electricity, or other fuels, while air-conditioning generally uses electricity; comparing electricity used for cooling with all fuels used for heating is not an apples-to-apples comparison. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Annual Energy Outlook discusses weather and building energy demand, including the effect of warmer conditions on cooling demand.
Casey Crownhart’s essay “In Defense of Air-Conditioning,” published by MIT Technology Review on July 18, 2025, cites a comparison in which U.S. residential space heating accounts for 42% of energy use and air-conditioning 9%. Those specific shares are not independently established here as current figures. They should not be treated as a direct measure of relative impact without checking the underlying data, year, fuels included, and accounting method.

The practical question is not whether cooling uses energy—it does—but how to meet a real safety need while limiting waste and expanding access. Building design, equipment efficiency, energy sources, climate, and household resources all shape that balance. The evidence cited here supports taking heat risk seriously; it does not establish one best cooling technology or quantify the full health and environmental effects of air-conditioning.

A 2024 peer-reviewed study by Falchetta, De Cian, Pavanello, and Sue Wing projects that the global share of households with residential air-conditioning could rise from 27% to 41% by 2050 under its central scenario. Across the study’s scenarios, the projected 2050 share ranges from 33% to 48%. These are modeled projections, not observed outcomes, and access remains uneven. Climate, income, housing, and electricity access influence who can cool a home and how much energy that requires. The study is summarized by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Earth & Environmental Systems Modeling program.

For construction and housing, this makes cooling a question of both building performance and resilience: homes need ways to manage dangerous heat, and the burden of doing so should not fall only on people who can afford equipment and higher bills. No single measure resolves the tradeoff, but treating air-conditioning as mere indulgence overlooks its potential role in protecting people during extreme heat.
