Turin’s former Fiat Lingotto factory has a new life above its old production floors: its rooftop test track is now La Pista 500, a public garden and contemporary-art venue. The conversion keeps the circuit and its industrial character visible while adding planted spaces and new ways for visitors to use the roof.
From car factory to public rooftop
Lingotto was designed in the 1920s by Giacomo Mattè Trucco for FIAT. Its rooftop circuit was built for testing cars and became one of the best-known features of the industrial complex. The track’s raised position and spiral access ramps remain part of the site’s architectural identity.
The change happened in stages. In the 1980s, architect Renzo Piano repurposed the complex for multiple uses while preserving the track and ramps. The later garden-conversion project is dated to 2019 by Turismo Torino. FIAT/Stellantis announced La Pista 500’s public opening on 22 September 2021. This distinction matters: the garden was not simply part of Piano’s earlier intervention.
What changed on the roof
The former test circuit is now a 1.2-kilometre rooftop route, 28 metres above ground, alongside planted areas and spaces for art and recreation. The launch announcement credits architect Benedetto Camerana, with botanical work by Cristiana Ruspa of Giardino Segreto; Turismo Torino identifies Camerana & Partners and landscape architect Ruspa.

According to FIAT/Stellantis’ 2021 launch account, the garden included more than 40,000 plants across 300 species and varieties. It described 28 planted islands covering just over 7,000 square metres within a 27,000-square-metre roof. These are launch-era figures, not an independently verified current inventory. The same account says the planting was selected with ecological criteria and seasonal variation in mind, including species from Piedmont and nearby areas, and that water- and fertilizer-reduction techniques were used.
The design retains the circuit as more than a visual relic. The launch description presents the route as a place for running, yoga and fitness, and says the track is also used by electric-powered vehicles, bicycles and scooters. Themed garden areas include a hazelnut grove, educational and dye plants, a kitchen garden, herbaceous borders and a meditation area.

Why the old track still matters
La Pista 500’s defining feature is the way it layers a new public use over a structure built for industrial production and vehicle testing. Visitors encounter the ring as both part of the original factory and a route through a garden. Contemporary art adds another reading of the site’s industrial history: Pinacoteca Agnelli and tourism listings describe sculptures, light and sound installations, expanded cinema and other interventions.
At the 2021 opening, FIAT CEO and Stellantis CMO Olivier François called the project “the largest roof garden in Europe.” That is a claim made by a project stakeholder at launch, not an independently established European ranking. Its more clearly evidenced significance is local and architectural: a once-restricted test track is now presented as a public-facing garden and cultural setting.

Planning a visit
La Pista 500 is at Via Nizza 230, 10126 Turin, and is associated with Pinacoteca Agnelli. At the time of the cited listings, Turismo Torino showed a full Pista 500 admission price of €8 and a full Pinacoteca Agnelli plus Pista 500 combination price of €12; reduced listings were €4 for Pista 500 and €2 for the combination. Italia.it listed Pinacoteca Agnelli hours as Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–19:00, with Monday closed. The project launch account reported butterflies and beetles observed in the garden’s first months. That is an early project description, not a controlled biodiversity study; it does not establish a measured environmental impact.
