Its leaves can look like maple leaves, so check how they attach to the twig and look for the distinctive fruit when it is present.
Sweetgum identification at a glance
- Leaves: Simple, glossy leaves with a star-like outline, usually five to seven pointed, toothed lobes. Leaves grow alternately along the twig.
- Fruit: Hanging, woody spheres covered with short, sharp projections, often called gumballs. They may remain on the tree into winter.
- Bark: Gray to brown and deeply furrowed on mature trees; younger bark can be smoother.
- Twigs and crown: Young twigs may have corky wings. Young trees often have a narrow, conical crown, while older crowns tend to become rounder and more spreading.
No single clue is conclusive in every season. Use the features available and look for more than one match.
How to check the leaves and twigs
Look for glossy, simple leaves with five to seven long-pointed lobes and toothed edges. A bruised leaf may be fragrant. Most importantly, inspect the twig: sweetgum leaves are arranged alternately, rather than in opposite pairs. Leaf shape alone can be misleading because some maples also have lobed leaves.
What sweetgum fruit looks like
The fruit is a particularly useful clue when foliage is absent. Sweetgum produces hanging, woody, spherical heads covered in short, sharp projections. These are the familiar “gumballs”; their many sections contain seeds. Fruit ripens in fall and can persist on the tree into winter. The US Forest Service describes this fruit and other identification features in its sweetgum profile.

How to identify sweetgum in different seasons
When the tree has leaves
Check for glossy, star-shaped leaves with pointed, toothed lobes, then confirm that they are alternate on the twig. Fall color can include yellow, orange, red, or purple.
In fall and winter
Look for the hard, spiny spherical fruit, which may remain on the branches after the leaves have fallen. The US Forest Service gives September to November as a general fruit-ripening period; actual timing varies with latitude and weather.

When the tree is dormant
Use any remaining fruit, the twig arrangement, corky wings on some young twigs, and bark together. Mature bark is deeply furrowed, but smooth bark on a young tree is not enough to rule sweetgum out.
Sweetgum or maple? Check the twig and fruit
Both sweetgum and some maples have lobed leaves, so silhouette is not the best deciding feature. Check whether leaves are alternate along the twig, and look for sweetgum’s woody, spiny spheres. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s American sweetgum identification profile and the North Carolina State Extension profile describe additional foliage and identification traits.

Where sweetgum grows
The USDA NRCS guide describes sweetgum as native to the southeastern, east-central, and south-central United States, southern Mexico, and Central America. The species is deciduous and can grow into a large hardwood tree. Range is context, not proof of identity: sweetgum may also be planted beyond its native range. See the USDA NRCS sweetgum guide for its description and range.

A young tree may not yet have deeply furrowed bark, and an out-of-season tree may have no leaves or visible fruit. Compare several available features rather than ruling it out on one missing clue. Cultivars can also differ: the University of Florida IFAS Extension notes a fruitless cultivar, so absence of gumballs alone does not exclude sweetgum in a planted landscape. See its sweetgum profile.
