There is no reliable master list of famous women’s favorite flowers. The best-documented examples are specific: Christina Rossetti is associated with moss roses, snowdrops and ferns, while Jane Austen’s letters offer evidence of her interest in several garden flowers. Those records are more useful than an unsourced ranking—and they can inspire a garden without confusing personal preference with Victorian symbolism.
Which flowers did famous women love?
Flower preferences are most credible when tied to evidence such as letters, diaries, garden records or careful scholarship. The Royal Horticultural Society’s Digital Collections describes material spanning more than 500 years of gardening history and science, including gardeners’ letters, diaries and notebooks. That kind of record can illuminate an individual’s interests, but it does not establish a comprehensive list of women’s favorites. Explore the RHS Digital Collections.
| Woman | Flowers or plants associated with her | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Christina Rossetti | Moss rose, snowdrops and ferns | A scholarly excerpt hosted by Scribd identifies the moss rose as one of Rossetti’s favorite flowers and discusses snowdrops and ferns as plants with personal significance. The excerpt’s publication details are not established here, so treat this as a qualified association, not a definitive inventory. Read the excerpt. |
| Jane Austen | Pinks, sweet williams, columbines, lilac and mignonette | An RHS article draws on Austen’s letters to discuss her interest in these plants. This is evidence of interest, not proof that every one was a favorite. Read the RHS article. |
These examples are different in kind. Rossetti’s association includes literary symbolism as well as personal significance; Austen’s plants are discussed through letters and garden planning. Neither should be turned into a claim that a flower had the same meaning or importance to every woman of the period.
What flowers did Christina Rossetti like?
A scholarly excerpt on Rossetti identifies the moss rose as one of her favorite flowers and describes its recurring use as a symbol for love in her poetry. It also discusses snowdrops and ferns as plants with personal significance in her life. These are three distinct points: a reported preference, a literary motif and plants with personal associations. They should not be collapsed into a single claim that all three were equally favored.

What did flowers mean in the Victorian language of flowers?
The language of flowers was a fashionable way to encode messages in bouquets in Britain and America from the 1820s to the 1880s. It was not a fixed, universal dictionary: authors produced different versions and assigned meanings according to their own preferences. The Royal Horticultural Society’s account explains why a flower’s supposed meaning should be attributed to a particular source rather than stated as an unchanging rule. - HIGH-YIELD QUALITY TESTED HEIRLOOM QUALITY – Non-GMO 'Vera' lavender seeds, 1,500+ per pack, with strong germination potential. Grow abundant lavender plants indoors or outdoors from the most trusted heirloom English lavender variety.
That distinction matters when interpreting a poet such as Rossetti. A flower may carry a literary meaning in a poem, have a personal significance for its author, and also appear in a period flower-language guide. Those are related but not interchangeable kinds of evidence.

Start with a rose inspired by Rossetti
A moss rose offers the clearest bridge from Rossetti’s documented association to a garden. The RHS describes roses broadly as suited to a sunny position with fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. This is baseline guidance for roses, not a cultivar-specific prescription; check the profile or supplier information for the particular moss rose you choose. See the RHS rose plant guide.

Roses vary in form, fragrance, color and flowering pattern, so choose for the garden you have as well as the historical connection you want to evoke. The general RHS guidance does not establish the requirements of any particular moss rose cultivar.
Use Austen’s plants as a broader garden palette
Austen’s associated plants suggest a way to build a historically inspired planting without making a claim about a single favorite: consider pinks, sweet williams, columbines, lilac and mignonette as a group drawn from the RHS account of her letters and garden interests. The evidence supports an association with her interests; it does not supply growing conditions for those plants. Check local, current plant guidance before choosing varieties or deciding where to place them.

Keep the history visible in the garden design
- Label the planting with the person and the kind of evidence behind the association, such as “discussed in Austen’s letters” or “associated with Rossetti in scholarship.”
- Separate literary symbolism from personal preference; a flower’s role in a poem does not by itself prove it was grown or favored by the poet.
- Choose plants for your site and maintenance needs, then use the historical link as a design theme rather than a substitute for plant-specific care advice.
