The Dyson PencilVac’s appeal is its unusually slim, lightweight cordless design, but the evidence does not support presenting this as a first-person review. Independent reviewers report useful hard-floor maneuverability; they also flag short high-power runtime and poor fit for carpet-heavy homes. Dyson’s current US listing describes it as a hard-floor-only vacuum, so it is best considered for the floors it is designed to clean—not as a whole-home replacement for a carpet-capable machine.
What the PencilVac is—and which version the claims describe
Dyson announced the PencilVac in May 2025 as a compact cordless vacuum with a 38 mm-diameter body, a 28 mm Hyperdymium motor spinning at up to 140,000 rpm, and 55 air watts (AW) of suction. Dyson’s launch materials give the machine a weight of 1.8 kg. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Dyson’s launch announcement and its current US PencilVac Fluffy listing describe the product and its specifications.
There are two versions, and their cleaner heads are different. The Fluffy has a Micro Fluffy head. The Fluffycones has four conical brush bars; Dyson says their design ejects long hair. That hair-handling description applies to Fluffycones, not the Fluffy model. Availability, included accessories and specifications can differ by market and change over time.
Eight features that stand out in the available reviews and specifications
1. A notably narrow body
Dyson lists a 38 mm body diameter. The slim format is the product’s defining design choice, but the specification alone does not establish that it cleans better than a conventional stick vacuum.

#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-slim. Cleans in all directions. The 1.5in handle fits into your hand. And the multi-directional cleaner heads make it easier to clean hard floors all around the home.
- De-tangles and removes long hair. Fluffycones cleaner head has four conical brush bars, to lift and strip hair so it can be easily sucked up with no tangling.
- Illuminates dust on hard floors. Two precisely angled blades of light reveal twice the amount of invisible dust in all directions, so you don’t miss a thing on hard floors.
- Lightweight and maneuverable. Weighs less than 4lbs. The Fluffycones hard floor cleaner head swivels around chair and table legs, reaches into awkward gaps, and flattens to fit under sofas with a height of just 3.75 in.
- 50 Air Watts of fade-free suction. Powered by a Dyson Hyperdymium digital motor spinning at up to 140,000rpm.
2. Low weight for carrying between rooms
Dyson’s 2025 launch announcement lists a 1.8 kg product weight. That compact format may appeal to people who prioritize a light machine for quick hard-floor cleanups; the figure is Dyson’s stated weight, not a comparative test result.
3. A head designed to move in more than one direction
For the Fluffycones version, Dyson says the counter-rotating conical bars are designed to clean in forward and reverse strokes and to reach toward edges. Those are manufacturer claims about the head design, not independently established results for every floor or debris type.

- EASY TO MANEUVER - The ultra-slim, lightweight handle is just 1.5 inches in diameter and 0.8 lbs in hand for ergonomic steering.
- WASH AWAY SPILLS, STAINS AND DEBRIS - The 64,000-filament microfiber roller powerfully washes away wet spills and stains, while removing debris and dirt on hard floors. Switch to MAX mode for spot cleaning and dried on stains. Unlike your mop, dirty water and debris is scraped away with each rotation so you don't use dirty water to clean.
- CONTINUOUS HYGIENIC CLEANING - Dirty water and debris are extracted from the roller on every rotation, while 8 hydration points ensure the floor is always washed with clean water.
- GOOD FOR SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED ROOMS Covers up to 1076 sqft.² A 300ml clean water tank stored in the cleaner head for optimum balance and less weight in hand.
- SELF-PROPELLED - A powerful motor rotates the roller to deliver self-propelled motion – gliding through wet and dry mess with ease.
4. A low profile for under-furniture cleaning
Dyson says the machine can lie flat to 95 mm high. That may help it reach beneath some low furniture, though actual clearance depends on the furniture and the path available to the head.
5. A small motor with a specific performance rating
Dyson rates the motor at up to 140,000 rpm and suction at 55 AW. These numbers describe the manufacturer’s design and specification; they should not be read as proof that it outcleans larger vacuums or works on carpet.

- [Smart Touch Screen] The top of the cordless stick vacuum cleaner is equipped with LED touch screen, which can adjust the suction by touching the screen, and can also check the battery life, dust cup fullness and filter maintenance at any time to enjoy intelligent cleaning.
6. A display and app for basic guidance
The machine has an LCD that shows the selected mode and remaining runtime, and Dyson says it connects to the MyDyson app for settings and maintenance guidance. The current US product page lists a charging dock and rotating combi-crevice tool; accessory bundles may vary by region.
7. Dust separation and filtration claims
Dyson says its two-stage linear dust-separation system captures 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns. The current US listing states that figure with company test conditions. It is a Dyson claim, not an independent filtration test reported by the reviewers cited here.

8. A compact debris system with an important caveat
Dyson’s 2025 launch announcement gives a 0.08 L bin capacity and says internal boost-mode testing found that compression could hold five times more dust and debris than the stated capacity. Dyson notes that results vary by debris and usage. Treat the five-times figure as a manufacturer claim based on that testing, not as a guaranteed usable capacity in everyday cleaning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the PencilVac good for carpet?
No: Dyson’s current US listing says the PencilVac is engineered for hard floors only. It should not be chosen as the sole vacuum for a home that needs regular carpet cleaning. Independent reviewers reinforce that limitation: CHOICE cautions that it may not suit homes with many rugs or carpets, while The Guardian says its reviewer did not run their usual carpet tests because the machine is designed for hard floors. Tom’s Guide also identifies carpet incompatibility as a drawback. CHOICE’s review, The Guardian’s review, and Tom’s Guide’s review discuss that scope.

- Choose between three cleaning modes for the right power where you need it.

How long does the PencilVac run?
Dyson’s current US Fluffy product page lists up to 30 minutes of maximum runtime and a 3.5-hour charge time. Its May 2025 launch announcement separately describes up to 60 minutes with a swappable battery pack. These are different published claims; the launch figure is tied to a swappable pack and stated conditions, so it should not be treated as the unconditional runtime of the current US listing. Actual runtime varies by mode and use. RTINGS, which says it bought and tested the Fluffycones version, reports limited runtime, particularly on the highest power setting. See RTINGS’ review.
Who is it likely to suit?
- Consider it if your regular cleaning is on hard floors and a narrow, light cordless form is especially appealing.
- Look elsewhere or keep another vacuum if you need to clean carpets, have many rugs, or rely on sustained high-power cleaning. CHOICE also warns against relying on it in larger homes or homes with frequent messes.
- Check the exact version and bundle before buying: Fluffy and Fluffycones use different heads, and regional accessory inclusion can vary.
Bottom line: a specialist, not an all-floor replacement
The PencilVac’s standout proposition is its compact, slim design for hard floors. Its limits are equally important: Dyson specifies hard-floor-only use, and independent reviewers report runtime constraints, especially at high power. The Fluffycones’ conical hair-ejecting head is a feature of that version alone. Whether the format is worthwhile depends on whether those advantages match the floors and cleaning routine in your home.
