Its U-channel supports the strapped-down tent as you crank it above rack height, roll it into position, and lower it. It may make solo handling more manageable, but the manufacturer’s specifications do not establish compatibility with every vehicle or tent.
How the Bad Boy rooftop tent lift works
The Bad Boy is a human-powered lift, not a powered forklift. As described by New Atlas on June 18, 2024, the user secures a folded tent to the lift’s U-channel, raises it with a hand crank, rolls the freestanding unit into position over the vehicle, then lowers the tent onto the roof rack. The process can also be used in reverse to move a tent off the vehicle for storage.
The lift’s purpose is to take much of the need to physically raise and carry the tent out of the operation. It does not remove the need to secure the load, maneuver the lift, or follow the product’s instructions.

Freestanding lift or ceiling-mounted hoist?
A freestanding lift and a ceiling hoist solve the same broad storage problem in different ways. The Bad Boy is a manually cranked option that rolls to the vehicle; a ceiling hoist depends on an appropriate overhead mounting location. Choose based on your vehicle, available space, and the equipment’s stated limits—not by comparing capacity numbers as if they described equivalent systems.

Ozil’s Roof Top Tent Hoist is one ceiling-mounted alternative. Its 100 kg working load limit must not be treated as directly interchangeable with RollNJack’s 195 lb lift capability: the products and their stated ratings differ. A ceiling hoist is not a practical substitute unless the mounting structure and installation meet that product’s requirements.

What the industrial Clear Span hoist is—and is not
The Clear Span Tent Hoist is a separate industrial system, not another manually operated rooftop-tent lift for a solo camper. Its 2020 manual from RAM Industries LLC calls for an industrial forklift rated at 5,000 lb or larger with a three-mast configuration, and provides assembly and safety instructions. Those requirements apply to Clear Span’s system, not to the RollNJack Bad Boy.

Checks to make before lifting a tent alone
- Verify the lift model against your vehicle and roof-rack configuration; the manufacturer’s vehicle categories do not establish universal fit.
- Check the tent’s weight and dimensions against the lift’s instructions and stated capacity. The 195 lb figure is RollNJack’s specification, not an independent test.
- Follow the instructions for assembly, load attachment, movement, and lowering. Keep people clear of the suspended load.
- If using a ceiling-mounted system, confirm the ceiling and mounting arrangement are structurally suitable and follow that hoist’s instructions.
