To make a PVC pipe Christmas tree, choose the build first: a wall-mounted panel of pipe rounds, a tabletop arrangement, or a freestanding branch tree. Their materials and assembly methods differ, so don’t combine the cut lists. The wall panel is a practical choice when you want a flat display; the tabletop version uses less space; the branch design stands on a base and can be staked outdoors.
Choose the PVC tree design that fits your space
| Design | How it’s built | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted panel | Short, varied-diameter PVC rounds arranged in a triangle and attached to plywood. | Panel footprint, pipe diameters and lengths, adhesive, and secure hanging or leaning. |
| Tabletop tree | Short pipe rounds joined into a compact tree outline; openings can hold ornaments or small objects. | Available table space, pipe diameter mix, adhesive, and finish. |
| Freestanding branch tree | Pipe sections connected with fittings, supported by a base and, outdoors, landscaping stakes. | Tree height, branch lengths, fitting count, base footprint, and stake location. |
These are distinct craft approaches, not a tested performance comparison. The tutorials do not establish which design is more durable. Examples and methods are described by Hallmark Channel, PVC Fittings Online, Curbly, and Charleston Crafted.
Build a wall-mounted PVC pipe tree
This version uses plywood as a backing and short pipe sections as the visible tree. Two published layouts illustrate different scales; use one as a starting point rather than combining their dimensions.
Choose a panel layout
- Compact example: Hallmark Channel’s plan uses a plywood panel cut to 4 feet 3 inches and PVC rounds roughly 2.5–3 inches long. It does not specify that this dimension is a universal panel width; lay out your own backing and tree outline before cutting.
- Larger example: PVC Fittings Online’s 2015 plan marks a triangle with a 3-foot base and 5-foot sides on plywood. It uses pipe diameters from 1 to 4.5 inches and rounds 2–3.5 inches long.
The two layouts are separate plans. In either case, measure the backing and arrange all the rounds inside the intended outline before attachment. The PVC Fittings Online tutorial specifically recommends confirming the arrangement and available pieces before gluing.

Gather materials for the chosen panel plan
For a plywood-backed version, gather plywood, PVC pipe in assorted diameters, a tape measure, pencil, painter’s tape, a cutting tool suited to the pipe, sandpaper, paint and a suitable applicator, the adhesive specified by your chosen plan, and hanging hardware if the panel will be mounted. Hallmark’s plan uses hot glue; PVC Fittings Online’s uses five-minute epoxy. Follow the adhesive maker’s directions and do not assume these adhesives are interchangeable.
Hallmark also lists brown paint for the backing, a drop cloth, picture-hanging hardware, and ornaments. PVC Fittings Online describes optional mirror-hanging brackets rated at about 50 pounds for its project; that is a detail of its 2015 tutorial, not a general load rating for other brackets, panels, walls, or installations.

Cut, arrange, and attach the rounds
- Mark the tree outline on the plywood with pencil and painter’s tape. Check that the panel’s intended hanging or leaning position leaves enough room for the full outline.
- Cut the pipe into rounds to the length selected for your plan. Smooth the cut edges. Check your tool’s capacity and instructions for the pipe size.
- Arrange the rounds within the outline before applying adhesive. Vary the diameters to fill the tree shape, and check that the full arrangement fits the backing.
- Finish the pieces as planned. Hallmark’s method lightly sands the pipe, spray-paints the inside and outside of each round, and allows drying time of up to 24 hours depending on climate.
- Attach the rounds using the selected tutorial’s method: Hallmark glues each piece by its bottom edge with hot glue; PVC Fittings Online uses five-minute epoxy and leaves the assembly overnight to dry. Follow the current product directions for your adhesive.
- Remove the painter’s tape after the rounds are positioned, then add ornaments once the finish and adhesive have dried as directed.
Make a tabletop tree from PVC rounds
Curbly’s small-scale design uses pipe with diameters from 1 to 4 inches, cut into uniform 3-inch lengths. It arranges the rounds within a taped tree outline, joins them with adhesive, lets the assembly dry, and spray-paints it. The openings can display ornaments or small objects. The page uses a saw and rotary-tool setup; its named Dremel tool is an example, not a requirement.
- Choose a stable, level work surface and tape out a tree outline that fits the intended tabletop.
- Cut the rounds to a uniform 3-inch length and smooth their edges. Use a saw or other tool appropriate to the pipe, and follow the tool maker’s instructions.
- Dry-fit the pieces inside the outline. Check that the rounds touch where you intend to join them and that the arrangement fits the available space.
- Glue the rounds together with an adhesive suitable for the materials, following its instructions for application and curing.
- After the assembly has dried as directed, spray-paint it and let the finish dry according to the paint label before decorating.
Assemble a freestanding branch-style PVC tree
Charleston Crafted’s plan is a different construction: it uses 1/2-inch PVC pipe sections, fittings, a base, and stakes for the yard. Its materials list for a three-tree configuration includes three 10-foot lengths of 1/2-inch pipe, twelve 1/2-inch crosses, three tees, three 90-degree elbows with side outlet, PVC cutters, and green and yellow spray paint. The project’s cut table assigns different trunk and branch lengths to its large, medium, and small trees; use that table for its configuration rather than assuming the same cuts suit a tree of another size.

- For outdoor placement, secure the base with landscaping stakes. Charleston Crafted also suggests string lights as an optional decoration.
Cutting, painting, and display considerations
- Cutting: The appropriate tool depends on the pipe and design. Charleston Crafted lists PVC cutters for its 1/2-inch branch tree, while the pipe-round plans describe saw-based cutting. Curbly advises using safety goggles and a dust mask for its saw-based project because PVC can splinter or shatter. Check tool instructions and capacity, and handle cut edges carefully.
- Adhesive: Use the attachment method for the design you chose. The panel tutorials differ—hot glue in Hallmark’s version and epoxy in PVC Fittings Online’s—while Curbly’s tabletop design joins rounds with adhesive. Follow the product label for application and drying or curing.
- Paint: Some plans paint the inside and outside of the rounds. Hallmark says light sanding helps paint adhere and notes that drying can take up to 24 hours depending on climate. Follow the paint label and use suitable ventilation; the tutorials do not establish a universal ventilation standard.
- Stability: A panel may be hung or leaned against a wall, while the branch tree’s outdoor version is staked down. Select and install hanging hardware for the actual panel, wall, and load rather than relying on a rating from a different project.
A local hardware store may offer to cut pipe, but service depends on the retailer and location. Ask before relying on that option.
