To play Velcro catch ball, each player uses a sticky paddle or mitt to catch and return a compatible soft ball. Face a partner, start close with gentle throws, and move farther apart only if both players are comfortable. Check the age grade and warnings on your particular set, and keep throws away from faces.
What you need
- A sticky paddle or mitt for each player, with any hand strap secured comfortably.
- A soft ball designed to stick to the paddles’ hook-and-loop surface.
- Clear space where players can throw and move without running into furniture, tools, or other people.
Sets vary: some are made for two players, while others include enough paddles and balls for a group. Check the package contents rather than assuming every set is the same. Balls and paddles from different brands are not established as interchangeable.
How to play with a partner
- Stand facing each other with clear space around you. Begin within comfortable throwing range.
- One player gently tosses the ball toward the other player’s sticky paddle or mitt.
- The catcher turns the sticky surface toward the ball and tries to catch it.
- After the catch, return the ball with a gentle toss. Keep taking turns.
- If both players are comfortable, gradually increase the distance or make throws a little less predictable.
There is no universal scoring system established for this informal game. The basic activity is simply to catch and return the ball.
How to practice alone
A product manual describes tossing the ball into the air or against a wall, then trying to catch it on the paddle. Choose a safe area with enough room to retrieve the ball, and use gentle throws.

Optional challenges
For a simple house variation, count how many catches you can make in a row, or take a small step back after a successful catch. These are informal ideas, not official rules. Stop or move closer if throws become difficult to control.

Safety and choosing a set
Follow the current age guidance and warnings printed on the exact set you use. Labels differ: for example, Refresh Sports lists its product for ages 3 and up and warns of a choking hazard from small parts for children under 3; Hobby Lobby’s separate listing gives an age grade of 4+ and a small-parts choking warning for children under 3. These are product-specific labels, not a universal age rule.
- Supervise young children and keep small parts away from children who could put them in their mouths.
- Use gentle throws and do not aim at eyes or faces.
- Leave enough clear space for players to move and retrieve the ball safely.
- Before choosing a set, check the number of paddles and balls, strap fit, ball-to-surface compatibility, age grade, warnings, and any stated indoor or outdoor guidance.
A university activity sheet describes gentle throwing with a Velcro glove and ball as an activity example; it does not establish a clinical benefit or guarantee developmental outcomes. A DIY option is also documented by Make: as a hook-and-loop catch-ball project, but it should be treated as a craft approach rather than a tested or certified toy design.
