An IcyBall cools through an intermittent ammonia-water absorption cycle: heat drives ammonia away from water, and later absorption of ammonia vapor removes heat at the evaporator. The 1929 patent explains that principle, but it is not a modern construction specification or evidence that a homemade unit would be safe. Because the apparatus contains refrigerant under pressure and presents chemical and materials hazards, building a working one requires qualified refrigeration and pressure-vessel engineering—not an improvised home build.
How the IcyBall produces cooling
David Forbes Keith’s US Patent 1,740,737, granted December 24, 1929, describes an intermittent absorption refrigerator with two connected vessels: a generator-absorber and an evaporator-condenser. The generator-absorber contains a liquid such as water; the other vessel contains a refrigerant such as ammonia. The patent is useful for understanding the cycle, not for specifying a safe modern device. Read the original patent.
Heating regenerates the refrigerant side
When the generator-absorber is heated, ammonia gas moves through a passage into the evaporator-condenser. In the patent’s account, this prepares the refrigerant side for the later cooling phase.
Cooling follows as ammonia is absorbed
After the generator-absorber cools, it absorbs ammonia vapor returning from the evaporator-condenser. That absorption removes heat from the evaporator-condenser and its surroundings, producing the cooling effect. The device is intermittent: heating and cooling occur in distinct phases rather than as a continuously driven cycle.

A later patent discusses intermittent solar ammonia absorption refrigeration and the broader ammonia-water cycle, but it does not validate a particular homemade IcyBall or establish its performance. See the later patent.
Would building one at home be dangerous?
It can be. OSHA explains that refrigeration systems store liquid ammonia in closed containers under pressure. If pressure is released, liquid ammonia evaporates rapidly. OSHA identifies risks of injury to the eyes, lungs, and skin; a liquid release can also cause freeze injury. These are concrete hazards of the refrigerant and containment system, not proof that every design or exposure has the same outcome. OSHA’s ammonia properties guidance describes these risks.

Material compatibility is also safety-critical: OSHA warns that ammonia can interact corrosively with copper, zinc, and some alloys. Vessel strength, materials, joining methods, inspection, and pressure relief therefore cannot be treated as ordinary workshop choices. The patent’s description of the cycle does not settle any of those engineering questions.
Why the patent is not a build plan
A patent that explains how a historical device operates is not a validated construction recipe for a present-day pressure system. The cited material does not establish a safe amateur fabrication method, a verified charge procedure, a tested modern IcyBall design, or measured cooling performance for a newly built unit. Consequently, it does not support publishing vessel dimensions, a refrigerant charge, welding instructions, pressure targets, or expected cooling results.

OSHA’s standards and references page points readers to refrigeration-piping standards and the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, which addresses pressure integrity and pressure-vessel design, fabrication, and inspection. Those references indicate the level of engineering involved; they do not replace checking the rules that apply where a device would be built or used, or obtaining qualified design and fabrication. - Study the cycle: Use the original patent to understand the two-vessel arrangement and the heating and absorption phases without treating its historical description as a modern safety approval.
- For a working ammonia system: Consult qualified refrigeration and pressure-vessel professionals about design, fabrication, inspection, material compatibility, and applicable local requirements before pursuing any build.
- For a home demonstration: Choose a non-pressurized educational activity that does not contain ammonia. It can illustrate energy transfer or absorption concepts without recreating a sealed refrigerant apparatus.
An ammonia refrigeration piping handbook is one technical resource OSHA lists for further background. It is reference material, not a stand-alone IcyBall design or a safe build guide.
