First check where the bit is stuck: in the drill’s chuck or in the workpiece. If it stays in the drill when you pull the tool away, work on the chuck; if it stays in the material, use the workpiece steps below. Switch off and unplug the drill before handling a bit in the chuck, and never force or hammer a stuck bit.
Before you try to remove the bit
- Switch off and unplug the drill before touching its chuck or bit.
- If the bit is hot, let it cool completely before removal. Harbor Freight’s manual for drill model 56845 warns: “Do not remove a drill bit until it has cooled. Do not strike stuck bits with a hammer.” Read the manual.
- Use controlled pressure. Stop if the bit slips, appears likely to break, or the chuck looks damaged.
If the bit is stuck in a keyless chuck
- With the drill unplugged, hold the chuck sleeve and turn it counterclockwise by hand to open the jaws. The direction and hand-operated approach are described in Screwfix’s stuck-bit guide.
- If the sleeve will not turn, Screwfix describes trying brief, low-speed bursts with the drill set to reverse. Keep hands clear of the chuck while the drill is powered; stop if this does not release the bit promptly or appears to strain or damage the tool.
- If the chuck remains seized or seems damaged, stop and consult the drill’s manual or model-specific service guidance. Do not assume a replacement chuck will fit: compatibility depends on the drill model.
If the bit is stuck in the workpiece
- Set the drill to reverse and try a controlled, low-force pull. The Screwfix guide recommends reverse motion as the first approach for a bit caught in material.
- If the bit’s shank is exposed, grip it with locking pliers and ease it back without twisting aggressively. Stop if the grip slips or the bit begins to bend.
- A lubricant or penetrating oil may help in some material-bound cases, but suitability depends on the material and working conditions. It is not a remedy for a seized chuck; avoid applying it where it could contaminate the work or create another hazard.
When to stop
If gentle methods do not work, the bit is at risk of breaking, or the drill appears damaged, stop rather than escalating force. Use the manual or service information for the exact make and model, particularly for keyed-chuck procedures, repair, or replacement. The available guidance does not establish one universal keyed-chuck method or a chuck that fits every drill.
