LiftMaster error code 4-1 means the opener detected unexpected resistance while the garage door was closing. Clear visible obstructions and inspect the rollers and hinges; if the door still stops, reverses, or struggles, stop troubleshooting and call a trained garage-door professional. Do not adjust springs, cables, pulleys, or brackets.
What LiftMaster error code 4-1 means
Chamberlain Group’s diagnostic guide calls code 4-1 “Resistance While Closing.” The opener detects an unexpected change in motor RPM as the door closes and stops or reverses when it senses more resistance than expected. This can happen anywhere in the closing cycle, not just when the door reaches the floor. Chamberlain Group’s diagnostic codes guide
The official myQ help page is inconsistent: its heading says “Excessive Opening Force Detected,” while its description says the operator detects too much force when closing and may reverse before reaching or after coming off the floor. The detailed diagnostic guide’s closing-resistance description is the clearer explanation of 4-1. myQ Error Code 4-1
The code identifies a resistance condition; it does not, by itself, identify a failed part.

Safe checks you can do
- Clear the door’s path. Remove visible items such as tools or bins from the door’s travel area.
- Look over the tracks, rollers, and hinges. Check for visible obstructions or wear. Do not dismantle door hardware.
- Follow the maintenance instructions for your opener model. The manufacturer advises lubricating rollers and hinges according to those instructions. The right product and procedure depend on the model; the general error guidance does not specify a lubricant formulation. Chamberlain Group maintenance and troubleshooting guidance
- Note when the door reverses. If it reaches the floor and then tries to travel farther, consult your model’s travel-limit instructions. That symptom may make a travel-limit check relevant, but code 4-1 alone is not a reason to change force settings.
- Stop if it continues to struggle. If the door still stops, reverses, or moves with difficulty after visible obstructions are cleared, contact a local garage-door professional or LiftMaster dealer. Chamberlain Group’s diagnostic codes guide myQ Error Code 4-1
Safety limits: what not to adjust
Do not disconnect an open garage door from its opener, and do not loosen or adjust springs, cables, pulleys, or brackets. These parts can be hazardous. A broken spring or a door that remains binding needs a trained door technician. Chamberlain Group maintenance and troubleshooting guidance LiftMaster 8550/8557 manual reproduction
