For a conventional bathroom sink pop-up stopper, disconnect the lift-rod linkage under the sink, loosen the pivot-rod nut at the drain, pull out the rod, and lift the stopper out from above. Identify the mechanism first: push-and-pull and twist-and-pull stoppers release differently, so follow their instructions rather than forcing them.
Identify the stopper before removing it
Look at the stopper in the basin, then inspect the drain beneath the sink. A conventional pop-up has a horizontal pivot rod entering the side or back of the drain body. Under the sink, that rod connects to a perforated clevis strap, which is linked to the faucetâs lift rod. The pivot rod holds the stopper in place, so it must be disconnected before the stopper can lift out.
Some stoppers have no pivot rod. Push-and-pull and twist-and-pull designs use different release methods; consult the instructions for that drain and do not force a stuck part. Drain designs vary, as KOHLERâs pop-up drain guidance notes.
Decide whether to replace the stopper or the whole drain
A stopper-only replacement is appropriate when the drain body and flange are sound but the stopper or its seal is damaged. A cracked or brittle seal, or broken stopper parts, are reasons to replace it. If the stopper is intact and merely dirty or out of adjustment, cleaning or adjusting it may be enough.

Replacing the entire pop-up drain is a larger job: it can require disconnecting the P-trap, removing the drain body and flange, and installing new sealing components. Use the instructions supplied with the replacement kit for component order and sealing materials. Retailer guides describe putty or silicone for some flange installations, but neither is universal; the kitâs directions should determine what to use and where to apply it.
Choose a compatible replacement
Match the replacement to the existing drain rather than choosing by appearance alone. Compare the stopper style, drain compatibility, finish, overflow configuration, and lift-rod linkage. Brand-specific and universal replacement stoppers are both sold, but âuniversalâ does not establish a fit for every sink. Check the product details against your drain before buying. Replace a conventional pivot-rod stopper
Prepare the work area
- Clear the cabinet and place a bucket or bowl beneath the drain; residual water may escape when the rod is removed.
- Have the matching replacement stopper ready. Keep pliers available if the retaining nut will not loosen by hand, and a screwdriver if the clevis uses a screw.
- Photograph the linkage or note which clevis hole holds the pivot rod. A spring clip or clevis screw may secure it.
Remove the old stopper
- Under the sink, release the spring clip or loosen the clevis screw connecting the pivot rod to the clevis strap.
- Loosen the retaining nut where the pivot rod enters the drain body. Pull the ball rod straight out; the stopper should then lift out from above.
- Inspect the stopper and seal. Replace damaged or brittle parts; if the stopper is intact, clean it and assess whether it can be reused.

Install and adjust the replacement
- Set the new stopper into the drain in the orientation needed for the pivot rod to engage its lower opening. Reinsert the rod through the drain body and stopper opening, then hand-tighten the retaining nut enough to hold the rod in place. Follow the replacement makerâs instructions if its design differs.
- Reconnect the pivot rod to the clevis at the original hole and secure the spring clip or clevis screw.
- Move the faucet lift rod to test the stopper. If it does not open and close fully, adjust the clevis position or try another clevis hole. Do not overtighten the retaining nut: too much pressure can keep the pivot rod from moving freely.
- Close the stopper and fill the basin to check that it holds water. Open it to confirm the sink drains, then inspect the pivot-rod nut and drain connections beneath the sink for leaks.
If the stopper will not release or work correctly
- It will not lift out: Check beneath the sink for a pivot rod and remove that rod before pulling upward. If there is no pivot rod, use the instructions for the push-and-pull or twist-and-pull mechanism; do not force it.
- It does not move fully: Check that the pivot-rod nut is not too tight, then adjust the clevis position or hole.
- It will not hold water: Check that the stopper is seated correctly and that the linkage closes it fully. Inspect the seal for cracking or brittleness.
- You find a leak after reassembly: Inspect the pivot-rod nut and drain joints, and verify that supplied seals or gaskets are correctly placed. There is no universal tightening torque or sealant choice established for all drain models, so follow the product instructions.
When a full pop-up drain replacement is needed
If the drain body or flange also needs replacement, follow the specific kitâs directions; the work is different from swapping the stopper alone. Typical full-assembly work involves placing a bucket underneath, disconnecting the P-trap and lift-rod linkage, removing the old assembly, and installing the new flange, washers, and gaskets in the specified order and orientation. Position the pivot-rod socket toward the back of the sink, reconnect the stopper and linkage, and reinstall the P-trap. Avoid overtightening components, then operate the stopper and inspect every under-sink joint for leaks.
