Repair a garden-path crack only after identifying the surface and checking whether the crack is stable. For a suitable, clean, dry crack in concrete or asphalt, use a sealant made for that surface; larger concrete cracks may call for repair mortar. Filling is often a temporary way to limit water entry, not a fix for movement, settlement, or a failing base.
Identify the path surface and assess the crack
These methods apply to continuous concrete and asphalt paths. Individual brick, flagstone, or concrete pavers need material-specific resetting or replacement guidance; do not treat their joints or cracked units as continuous pavement.
Before choosing a repair, inspect the crack and the surrounding path:
- Width and depth: Measure the opening and check whether it is shallow or deep enough to need backer rod.
- Stability: Look for signs the crack is widening, recurring, or moving, and check for settlement, broken edges, crumbling, or loose pieces.
- Water: Note whether water pools on the path or enters at the crack, and consider whether drainage is directing water beneath it.
The Federal Highway Administration’s 2013 A Guide for Maintaining Pedestrian Facilities for Enhanced Safety identifies cracks at least 0.25 inches wide but less than 0.5 inches wide as most suitable for the sealant and mortar approaches it discusses. Cracks wider than 0.5 inches are least suitable for those treatments; if repair material settles or pops out, the resulting surface can create an accessibility concern. These are pedestrian-facility repair guidance ranges, not a complete residential code or a guarantee that a crack in this range is safe to fill.

Choose a repair material that matches the surface

FHWA describes routing a crack to receive sealant or masonry material. For concrete, it also describes undercutting and filling with concrete or masonry material to help form a structural bond. These are repair concepts, not a universal DIY specification: the sources do not establish one routing profile, primer, application thickness, temperature range, or cure time for every product.
Prepare and fill a suitable, stable crack
- Choose the product first. Check that its label covers the path material and intended crack repair. Follow that product’s requirements for routing, primer, temperature, application, and curing.
- Remove debris and let the crack dry. FHWA states that cracks must be completely clean and dry when sealant or masonry material is used. Loose debris or moisture can undermine the repair.
- Use backer rod if the crack is deep and the product calls for it. FHWA notes that deep cracks may need backer rod. Follow the product directions for fit and placement rather than packing the opening with an improvised material.
- Apply the compatible repair material as directed. Keep the repair within the product’s stated application conditions and allow it to cure as specified before using the path.
Address drainage and recurring failure
Water entry, poor drainage, and weak underlying layers can contribute to pavement distress. The Ohio Department of Transportation’s ODOT Pavement Repair Guide recommends considering drainage and whether visible surface damage may mask deeper problems. That is a diagnostic principle for a garden path, not a diagnosis of any particular crack.

If a repaired crack returns, the path moves, water continues to collect, or the surface is displaced or breaking into loose pieces, repeated filling is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. Have the path assessed for a drainage, base, or structural repair, or for replacement suited to its construction.

FHWA characterizes the durability of the crack repairs it discusses as generally less than several years, with results varying significantly by method, crack depth, and underlying stress. Its 2024 Guide for Maintaining Active Transportation Infrastructure for Enhanced Safety summarizes the expected durability as a few years. Treat these as qualified general estimates, not a service-life promise: a surface repair may help control water entry, but it does not ensure a lasting structural correction.
