Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To sharpen a card scraper, first make its edge straight, smooth, and square to its faces; then use a harder burnisher to turn a small burr along that edge. The burr—not the flat edge itself—does the cutting. Prepare the edge before burnishing, and follow one method from start to finish because traditional and guided carbide burnishers use different procedures.
Prepare the scraper’s edge
Inspect the edge. If it is worn, uneven, or damaged, file or joint it until it is straight. Smooth the narrow edge with a honing surface, removing rough marks and unwanted burrs while keeping the edge square to the scraper’s faces. The goal is a straight, smooth, defect-free edge; the exact abrasive and sequence vary by method. StewMac describes honing to that finished condition, while WWGOA uses a file followed by a whetstone. The Accu-Burr instructions also call for filing and honing before burnishing.
If the edge is already sound, you may be able to refresh the hook without re-jointing it. Do not skip edge preparation when the edge itself is rough, out of square, or damaged: burnishing forms the cutting burr, but does not correct those defects.
Raise and turn the burr
- Secure the scraper. Hold it firmly so it cannot slip while you work along the edge.
- Use a burnisher harder than the scraper. Draw it along the prepared edge with controlled pressure to raise a burr.
- Turn the burr into a hook. Continue only as directed by the method for your burnisher. In StewMac’s traditional process, one steady stroke is usually enough to draw out the burr before a further controlled stroke turns the hook. Its instructions warn that too many drawing-out strokes may embrittle the edge.
Do not combine stroke counts or angles from different instructions. WWGOA describes a multi-pass traditional method; the carbide Accu-Burr uses its grooves to guide the tool with light, even pressure. Lee Valley’s care sheet covers straight scrapers and traditional burnishers, including the Veritas Tri-Burnisher. Follow the instructions for the burnisher and procedure you are actually using.

- Scraper burnishers are primarily employed for the maintenance of scraper edges. Cabinet scrapers and card scrapers are versatile cutting tools used for smoothing wood surfaces, removing imperfections, and creating finely finished surfaces. Over time, the edge of a scraper can become dull or damaged, requiring regular maintenance to keep it sharp
- The dual-handle design, made from beech wood and reinforced with a steel file, enables you to exert greater and more stable pressure on the scraper edge, facilitating the creation of a burr
- This Scraper Burnisher is constructed from chrome molybdenum steel that is heat-treated to HRC 61. It features a total length of approximately 11-1/2 inches, with a steel rod diameter measuring approximately 3/8". The working length of the exposed rod is 3-1/16"
- Place the burnisher rod against the edge of the scraper at a consistent angle, typically around 5-10 degrees from perpendicular, and apply even pressure to the burnisher while maintaining the angle. Repeat this rolling motion several times until you can feel a raised burr along the entire edge
- After use, store the Scraper Burnisher in a dry, cool place to prevent rust or corrosion. You can also apply a light coat of oil to the steel rod to provide additional protection against moisture
Test the hook and troubleshoot
Try a controlled scraping stroke on scrap wood. A working scraper should produce shavings. WWGOA notes that dust instead of shavings can indicate that the burr is too small; check that the hook formed and repeat the appropriate burnishing steps if necessary.
- The scraper produces dust, not shavings: The burr may be too small. Recheck the hook and follow your chosen method to form it.
- The edge is nicked: Restart by jointing the edge, then smooth it and raise a new burr. Lee Valley’s instructions recommend repeating the process from jointing when the hook is nicked.
- The edge is rough or uneven: Return to filing or jointing and honing. Burnishing will not make a defective edge straight or smooth.
Choose the right instructions for the tool
A flat card scraper is sharpened by preparing its narrow edge and turning a burr. A handled cabinet-scraper blade is a related but different tool: Stanley’s instructions describe a beveled blade and a different procedure. Do not apply that bevel procedure as the default for a flat card scraper.
