Shovel snow in small loads, keep the shovel close, and push or sweep instead of lifting whenever the space and snow allow. Work slowly, take breaks, and stop if you feel unwell. Because cold-weather exertion can strain the heart, people with known or suspected heart disease or cardiac risk factors should arrange for someone else to clear the snow, following their clinician’s advice.

Choose whether to shovel, push, or arrange help

The best approach depends on the area, the snow, and your health. Pushing or sweeping usually involves less exertion than lifting and throwing, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), but it does not make snow removal risk-free. When pushing is impractical, use small loads and avoid forceful throws.

  • Push or sweep: Use this method when the snow can be moved to the side without blocking access or piling it where it will cause a problem.
  • Lift small loads: Use a manageable shovel and move only a little snow per pass, particularly where a narrow path or steps make pushing difficult.
  • Arrange help: The AHA says people with known or suspected heart disease or heart-disease risk factors should have someone else do snow removal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises people with heart disease or high blood pressure to follow their doctor’s advice about shoveling or other hard work in the cold.

Do not treat careful technique or frequent breaks as medical clearance to shovel when your clinician has advised against it.

Use body mechanics that limit awkward lifting

Mayo Clinic’s snow-shoveling safety guidance recommends taking small loads and keeping the shovel close to your body. It suggests using a small shovel, or filling a larger one no more than halfway. These are practical ways to avoid oversized loads; the source does not set a universally safe weight limit.

  1. Stand with your feet apart for balance.
  2. Keep the shovel close rather than reaching far out in front of you.
  3. Bend your knees and lift with your legs.
  4. Avoid twisting to throw snow. Turn your whole body to place a load, or push snow aside when feasible.

Snow that has started melting can be heavier than fresh snow, Mayo Clinic notes. Reduce the amount you move per pass as conditions change rather than assuming each shovelful takes the same effort.

Clear in manageable increments

The National Weather Service (NWS) advises: “Move only small amounts with each pass of the shovel.” When practical, clearing in increments also avoids having to move a large accumulation all at once. Neither the NWS nor Mayo Clinic specifies a universal depth or schedule for clearing, so adjust the pace and load to the snow and your capacity.

Dress for cold and avoid overexertion

The AHA recommends dressing warmly in layers, staying dry, and covering your mouth and nose in very cold conditions. Cold combined with sudden strenuous effort can strain the heart. Pace the work and take breaks, but do not use those precautions as a reason to continue if you are struggling or have been told not to shovel.

Know when to stop and get help

Stop immediately if you experience chest pain or pressure, lightheadedness, or palpitations or an irregular heartbeat. The AHA says to call 9-1-1 if symptoms do not subside shortly after stopping. If someone collapses and is unresponsive with no pulse, call for emergency help and start Hands-Only CPR, as the AHA advises.

Reduce slipping risk after clearing

The CDC says sand may be used on walkways to reduce slipping risk. Sand is traction material, not a de-icer. Apply it where people need footing, and do not assume it melts ice.

Choose a shovel by fit, not promises

Use a shovel you can manage while keeping loads small; a shape or approach that lets you push snow may also be useful where the layout permits. The cited safety guidance does not establish a best brand, material, handle design, or model, and no shovel makes strenuous snow removal safe for everyone. If you need someone else to clear the area, consider arranging local snow-removal help rather than relying on equipment to overcome a medical restriction.
