Protect plants from sunburn by matching them to the site’s light, avoiding abrupt exposure changes, and adding suitable shade when needed. Keep roots healthy and soil moisture appropriate, and take extra care with seedlings, newly planted trees, and bark exposed by pruning. Sunburn on leaves, fruit, and tree trunks can look different—and trunk treatments such as whitewash are not for foliage.

How to recognize plant sunburn

Sunburn is most likely on plant surfaces directly exposed to intense sun. It may follow a move from shade to full sun, the loss of overhead shade, or pruning that exposes previously protected bark. South- and west-facing sides and the upper surfaces of horizontal branches can be especially affected, according to UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management.

  • Leaves: Broadleaf plants may develop glazed, silvery, or reddish-brown areas, with dead tissue starting at the tips, margins, or between veins. Conifer needles may turn black or brown or drop early.
  • Flowers and fruit: Exposed portions can be damaged when a plant receives more direct light than its foliage or fruit can tolerate.
  • Tree bark: Recent injury may discolor the bark and cause sap to ooze. As it dries, bark can crack, sink, or peel away. Severe trunk or limb injury can lead to cankers, girdling, or death.

Brown leaves or damaged bark do not, by themselves, confirm sunburn. Check whether the damaged area faces the sun and whether exposure changed recently. Drought, disease, pests, cold injury, and physical damage can produce similar symptoms; UC IPM specifically cautions that other disorders can resemble bark sunburn or sunscald.

Prevent sunburn on leaves, flowers, and fruit

Choose a suitable spot and light level

Check a plant’s light requirements against the conditions where it will grow. Shade-loving flowers such as hostas and impatiens can suffer scorch when planted in full sun, as the University of Maryland Extension notes. Also account for reflected light and heat: a white wall or reflective paving can make a nearby spot harsher than it first appears. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources advises considering plant sun and water tolerances before planting.

Acclimate plants before exposing them to full sun

Do not move a shade-grown plant straight into intense outdoor light. Give it a gradual transition suited to its species and growing conditions; there is no single transition schedule established for every plant. Seedlings and indoor-started plants need particular care. The University of Arkansas Extension describes grayish-white damage on young plants exposed to sun and wind without first being hardened off.

Add partial or temporary shade

Where a plant is otherwise well suited to the site, reduce direct exposure with partial shade or a temporary structure such as shade cloth or a shade sail—options named by UC Agriculture and Natural Resources. The right amount of shade depends on the plant and conditions; the cited guidance does not establish a universal shade percentage. For container plants, moving the pot to a more suitable exposure may be practical.

Protect young trees and newly exposed bark

Preserve natural shade

Lower branches can shade a young trunk. Avoid unnecessary summer pruning, and UC IPM advises against removing more than about 20% of a tree’s canopy in one year. Planting where a tree has room to reach its expected size and receive appropriate light can help prevent later exposure problems.

Whitewash susceptible trunks when appropriate

For susceptible young trunks or older bark newly exposed to sun, UC IPM recommends applying white interior water-based latex paint diluted with an equal portion of water. UC ANR also describes diluted white interior latex paint for the bare trunk of a newly planted tree. This is a targeted bark treatment, not a remedy for burned leaves or fruit. UC IPM considers interior water-based paint safer for trees than oil- or water-based exterior paint. See its tree sunburn guidance for context.

Use trunk wrap only for the relevant season and risk

In cold climates, trunk insulation may help protect bark from winter solar warming and temperature swings. That is a different problem from hot-weather sunburn on foliage. UC IPM says to remove trunk insulation during warm weather. Wraps are not right for every tree: the University of Arizona notes that they can create hiding places for pests.

Support roots without overwatering

Restricted soil volume, unhealthy roots, and unsuitable soil moisture can make it harder for plants to take up enough water. Mulch can conserve soil moisture and moderate summer soil temperatures, but watering more often is not automatically the answer. UC IPM cautions that overly frequent irrigation can harm roots or interfere with water uptake.

What to do when sunburn appears

First, reduce continued exposure if possible: add shade or shelter, and address unsuitable soil conditions and irrigation. UC IPM says injury can often be remedied when foliage has not already been killed. Dead tissue will not become healthy again, but reducing ongoing stress may help protect the remaining plant. Reassess the diagnosis if the damage does not match the sun-exposed pattern or continues despite improved conditions.

Keep winter sunscald separate from summer sunburn

Winter sunscald involves bark injury associated with cold-weather conditions and solar warming; hot-weather sunburn can affect foliage, fruit, or newly exposed bark. A trunk wrap used as winter insulation is not a year-round substitute for suitable planting, retained shade, or summer exposure management. Remove insulation during warm weather as UC IPM recommends.
