Whether you can open a fan for cleaning depends on its exact make and model. Unplug it first, find its model number, and follow the owner’s manual. Some table or pedestal fans have removable grilles and blades; many tower fans are designed to stay closed and be cleaned from the outside. Never pry a resistant grille or open the motor housing for routine cleaning.
Before opening a fan, check whether it is designed to come apart
Look for the model label—often on the back, underside or base—and find the matching owner’s manual. Similar-looking fans can use different fasteners and have different disassembly limits. The manual, rather than a generic guide, determines whether you may remove a grille, ring or blade. Bionaire’s care guidance, for example, says not to open its tower units, while Lasko recommends cleaning its tower-fan grilles from the outside (Bionaire support; Lasko’s tower-fan cleaning guide).
- Turn the fan off and unplug it before cleaning or maintenance. Keep it unplugged throughout any permitted disassembly.
- Check the exact model’s manual for what may be removed and how. Do not assume screws, clips, rings or twist-locks work the same way across models.
- If the manual does not give an opening procedure, clean only the accessible exterior or contact the manufacturer.
Choose the cleaning method the manual allows
Fixed grilles and tower fans
Leave a fixed grille or sealed tower housing in place. Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment on accessible exterior grilles and intake vents. A flexible fan cleaning brush can help reach dust between grille bars, but it is not a reason to pry the housing open. Lasko’s US support guidance, updated July 15, 2021, advises vacuuming its tower fan’s exterior grilles without opening the unit; Bionaire likewise says not to open tower units (Lasko; Bionaire). Compressed air is mentioned in some manufacturer guidance, but its use depends on the model; follow your own manual.
Fans with a removable grille
Remove a grille only if the manual for your model explicitly permits it, and use the specified release method. Some models use screws, clips, rings or a twist-lock; there is no universal sequence. If a grille resists, stop and check for a remaining fastener or consult the manual rather than prying. Keep clear of the motor and wiring, and clean only accessible surfaces.

Fans with removable blades
Take off blades only when the model’s instructions specifically authorize it. For example, Dreo’s PF513S/613S guidance specifies removing a front-grille screw, turning the grille counterclockwise, then removing the blade cap and blade assembly. It also gives that model’s cleaning, drying and reassembly directions. These steps are for those named models only; do not apply them to another fan (Dreo user manuals).
Desk-fan exterior cleaning
For the Tefal Harmony Desk VF3617T0, the instructions say to unplug the fan, vacuum the front grille and wipe it with a slightly damp cloth. They warn against letting water enter the unit and against abrasive products. Treat this as guidance for that model, not permission to wet or wash another fan (Tefal instructions for use).

Keep moisture and tools away from electrical parts
Do not let water enter the housing, motor, controls or wiring. Use a soft or microfiber cloth on surfaces the manual allows you to wipe; a damp cloth is appropriate only when the model’s instructions permit it. If the manual allows washing detached, non-electrical pieces, dry them completely before reassembly. Use a Phillips screwdriver only when the exact manual calls for it—Bionaire’s box-fan directions are one example, not a general instruction for other fans (Bionaire support).
Know when not to open the housing
Do not pry open a sealed housing, remove motor-compartment screws or reach into wiring or controls for routine cleaning. Guidance from a Honeywell-affiliated source distinguishes user-removable grilles or bases from motor and electrical housings; access limits still depend on the individual product (Honeywell fan-cleaning instructions). If the manual provides no opening procedure, stay with exterior cleaning or ask the manufacturer for model-specific advice.

Dry, reassemble and check before use
- Let any permitted washed parts dry fully before putting them back.
- Follow the manual’s alignment and fastening steps. Make sure the grille is securely attached and any permitted parts are correctly seated.
- Reconnect power only after the fan is fully reassembled and dry.
A model-specific safety notice is a reason to pay particular attention to current instructions. In a notice dated March 18, 2025, Bestron Nederland B.V. said the protective grille on its DDF35W table fan must not be removed to clean the blades. The warning applies to that model, but it illustrates why a general disassembly guide should not override a current manual or product safety notice (Bestron safety warnings).
