First decide whether you mean moving the cabin across lake ice or hauling it on a road. These are different jobs: ice travel depends on changing ice conditions and local restrictions; road transport depends on the cabin and trailer manuals, towing setup, route, and applicable transport rules. There is no universal safe ice thickness, towing capacity, or tie-down method established for every cabin.
Moving a cabin across lake ice
Before moving a fish house on ice, check current local rules and conditions. In Minnesota, county sheriffs may prohibit or restrict motorized vehicles when ice conditions are dangerous. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources does not measure lake ice; it advises checking thickness at least every 150 feet and cautions that “Ice is never 100% safe.” The interval is guidance, not a guarantee that a route is safe. Do not treat a single thickness reading as approval to travel. Conditions can vary along a route, and local restrictions may change. Check current advisories and rules for the lake and jurisdiction before moving.
Hauling a cabin on a road
For road transport, use the owner’s manual for the cabin and the trailer manual to determine whether the setup and route are suitable. Confirm the relevant requirements with the authorities responsible for the places you will travel. Requirements depend on the cabin, trailer, towing setup, dimensions, weight, and route; the available official guidance does not establish a universal towing limit, tie-down method, or equipment list.

In Minnesota, the DNR classifies wheeled fish houses as non-portable shelters for licensing purposes and says trailers used to haul fish houses need registration. Those rules are specific to Minnesota. Check the current requirements where the cabin will be used and transported. The DNR’s ice-fishing shelter page is also a source for the phrase “fish-house trailer,” but it does not establish the capacity or suitability of any particular trailer.
Minnesota shelter rules to check before moving
Minnesota Statute 97C.355 and DNR guidance address shelter licensing and identification, unattended portable shelters, placement, seasonal removal, and waste. A wheeled fish house is treated as a non-portable shelter. Check the current statute and DNR guidance for how the requirements apply to your shelter and situation:

- Minnesota Statute 97C.355 generally requires a license to place a non-portable fish house on state-water ice and requires identifying information on non-portable shelters.
- The statute sets conditions for portable shelters to remain attended or within 200 feet, and prohibits placing a shelter within ten feet of an existing shelter. Consult the current text for exact application.
- The DNR says shelter removal deadlines vary by inland region and border water. Its page lists March 2, 2026, south of the boundary it describes and March 16, 2026, north of it, with different dates for border waters. These dates are seasonal; verify the current deadline and any local restrictions before relying on them.
- Do not deposit waste directly on the ice or in state waters. The DNR links to public dump stations for wheel-house gray- and black-water tanks.
Rules differ outside Minnesota. Check the responsible local agency’s current requirements rather than applying Minnesota dates or provisions elsewhere.
