Bamboo can grow successfully in a pot if you choose a species suited to your climate, use a roomy container with good drainage, and keep the root zone moist without letting it sit in water. Because bamboo size and cold tolerance vary widely, plan for the plant and your local winters rather than relying on a single pot size or hardiness claim.
Choose a bamboo that fits your site
Before buying, check a variety’s mature size, growth habit, light needs, and cold tolerance. Bamboo includes clumping types, which expand from a central clump, and running types, which spread by rhizomes. A pot can help contain growth, but it does not remove the need to choose a plant that fits the space or to manage its roots over time. UC IPM recommends considering clumping bamboo and notes that species differ in size and hardiness: UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program: Bamboo.
Bamboo generally grows in full sun to part shade, but suitable exposure depends on the species. Ask a local nursery or extension office which named varieties work in your region and whether their winter tolerance applies to container growing. Georgia Cooperative Extension also emphasizes that bamboo species and growth habits differ: Growing Bamboo in Georgia.
Pick a large pot with reliable drainage
For smaller bamboos, the Royal Horticultural Society recommends a container at least 45 cm (18 in) across and deep. An Ask Extension response recommends a pot at least 18 inches deep, wider than it is deep, with drainage holes. Treat these as general starting points, not universal specifications: the plant’s size and growth rate affect how much room it needs.

Choose a sturdy container with unobstructed drainage holes. Water must be able to escape; a pot that holds water around the roots can leave the growing medium waterlogged. A peat-free, loam-based potting compost is the RHS recommendation for container bamboo. See its guidance at How to grow bamboo and the container advice from Ask Extension: Bamboo plants in patio containers.
Plant bamboo and establish it
- Prepare the pot. Confirm that drainage holes are open, then add enough potting medium to position the rootball at the appropriate height.
- Set the plant in place. Place the rootball in the container and fill around it with potting medium. Keep the plant at the same depth it was growing before.
- Water thoroughly. Water until the medium is evenly moist and excess water drains freely from the bottom.
- Choose a suitable position. Place the pot in light appropriate for the species, generally full sun to part shade, and check moisture regularly while the plant establishes.
Do not leave the container standing in a saucer of water. Bamboo in pots can dry out faster than plants in the ground, while poor drainage creates the opposite problem.

Water and feed during active growth
Check the growing medium regularly and water when it begins to dry; do not wait for the rootball to dry out completely. During the growing season, the RHS advises watering container bamboo regularly and liberally because pots dry faster. Insufficient water can contribute to poor growth, leaf drop, and dieback. Adjust watering for the weather, pot size, and site rather than following a rigid year-round schedule.
Feed during active growth. The RHS recommends a general liquid feed from March to October; that calendar reflects its guidance and should be adapted to the local growing season. Georgia Cooperative Extension describes bamboo in pots as a heavy feeder and discusses water-soluble or slow-release fertilizers. Use a product suitable for container plants and follow its label rather than assuming a particular formulation or dose is required.

Control size with pruning, division, and repotting
As bamboo grows, roots and rhizomes can fill the container. The RHS advises moving a container plant to a larger pot every few years or dividing it into several plants. The right timing depends on how quickly the bamboo grows and how much space remains in its pot; check the plant rather than treating a fixed interval as a guarantee.
Older plants can be lifted and divided every few years to keep clumps manageable. In spring, remove dead, damaged, weak, or spindly canes. If you need to limit height, the RHS says cane tops can be pruned.

Protect potted bamboo through winter
Do not assume that a bamboo hardy in the ground will survive the same winter in an exposed pot. Roots in containers have less insulation from surrounding soil, and species, local temperatures, and wind exposure all matter. The RHS advises keeping the compost from drying over winter, sheltering exposed pots, and insulating containers during very cold weather. Where practical, it also suggests moving plants to a frost-free cold greenhouse.
Local conditions can change the recommendation. In Colorado, Ask Extension has cautioned that container bamboo may not overwinter well outdoors because cold and wind can freeze-dry roots; another Colorado response recommends bringing it indoors for winter or treating it as an annual in that local context. Those answers are not universal rules for other climates. Check species-specific advice from a local extension service or nursery before deciding whether to leave a pot outside.
