For a mum already blooming in fall, remove faded flower heads and dead or diseased growth instead of cutting back the whole plant.
First, decide whether to pinch or deadhead
Pinching shapes a growing plant: removing a shoot tip encourages side branches and a fuller mound. Deadheading removes spent flowers from a plant that is already blooming. These are different jobs, and the right one depends on the mum’s stage of growth.
- Actively growing, not yet budding: pinch the tips to encourage branching.
- Already flowering: deadhead individual faded flowers and remove dead or diseased material; avoid a major shaping cut.
Fall mums sold in bloom may already have been pinched repeatedly by the grower to create a compact display. Ohio State University Extension describes this practice in its fall mum care guidance.
How to pinch a potted mum for a fuller shape
- Wait until new shoots are about 6 to 8 inches tall.
- Use your fingers to snap or pinch off the growing tip. You can also use clean hand pruners if you prefer.
- As new growth develops, repeat the process for two to three rounds from spring to mid-summer, following Iowa State University Extension’s guidance.
- Stop pinching before flower buds form. Pinching too late can disrupt flowering.
Pinching encourages additional branches, which can make the plant bushier. Iowa State’s pinching advice gives the 6-to-8-inch shoot size and two-to-three-round schedule. The appropriate last pinch depends on the variety and local conditions; Utah State University Extension explains that final timing differs among early-, mid-, and late-season mums in its chrysanthemum growing guide. Treat those local timing recommendations as variety- and location-specific, not universal calendar dates.

How to deadhead mums that are already blooming
When a flower fades, remove that individual flower head rather than shearing the whole plant. Also remove dead or diseased parts. Deadheading tidies the display and may encourage more blooms, but it does not guarantee that every cultivar will rebloom. The University of Florida IFAS Extension notes this potential in its chrysanthemum care information.
What tools do you need?
Fingers are enough for pinching soft growing tips. Small hand pruners are optional for clipping tougher stems or faded flowers; Iowa State also lists pruning shears and hedge clippers as possible tools. You do not need to cut the whole plant simply to remove spent blooms.

Should you cut back a potted mum after frost?
Do not apply an in-ground winter pruning rule automatically to a container plant. Penn State Extension discusses cutting back mums after a hard frost in the context of plants overwintered in the ground; what to do with a potted mum depends on whether it is a hardy garden mum or a less-hardy florist mum, as well as the winter conditions and protection available. Florida IFAS notes that garden mums are hardier than florist mums, but the cited guidance does not establish one winter-storage method that works for every pot and climate.
If you hope to keep the plant, identify its type and consider your local winter conditions before deciding whether or when to prune. Cutting back after frost is not a universal instruction for all potted mums.
