A University of Maryland Extension response dated April 14, 2026, says there is “no reliable and effective wasp repellent” and addresses vinegar among the remedies people commonly ask about. There is no established vinegar application rate or duration that supports a dependable spray recipe.
Will vinegar keep wasps away?
There is no reliable evidence in the cited guidance that spraying vinegar creates a lasting, yard-wide barrier against wasps. The University of Maryland Extension’s response to a question about vinegar and other suggested remedies does not endorse vinegar as an effective repellent. Avoid relying on a vinegar-and-water mixture to prevent wasps from entering an outdoor area, and do not expect a particular concentration or repeat schedule to work.
That answer concerns repelling wasps across an area; it does not mean every wasp in the yard is a threat or that every nest needs treatment.
First, work out whether there is a nest
A few wasps visiting flowers, food, or a water source do not by themselves establish that there is a nest nearby. Observe the insects from a safe distance rather than approaching or disturbing them. If you notice repeated traffic, watch where wasps travel to and from, but do not block an entrance or try to handle the nest.

Wasps vary in behavior and nesting location, so identification matters before choosing a response. The University of New Hampshire Extension’s wasp-control guidance explains why nest type and location affect management. If you cannot identify the insects or locate activity without getting close, leave the investigation to a pest professional.
When leaving a nest alone is reasonable
Wasps can be beneficial predators, and a nest in an out-of-the-way spot may not need to be removed. If it is not near a doorway, walkway, play area, or other regularly used space, keeping your distance and leaving it undisturbed may be the safer choice. When a nest needs attention
A nest beside a frequently used entrance or other high-traffic area may present a practical risk. The right response depends on the species, nest location, and whether it can be approached safely. Do not attempt treatment yourself if anyone who might be exposed has a sting allergy, or if the nest is hard to reach. A pest-management professional is an appropriate option when access is difficult or you are uncomfortable handling the situation.
If considering a wasp and hornet spray
Use a wasp and hornet spray only when the product label covers the identified pest and the application site. Read and follow that product’s current directions, including precautions for people, pets, and the surrounding environment. Do not transfer directions from one pesticide to another.

For example, an EPA label dated June 1, 2026 for a specific product gives product-specific directions on applying when wasp activity is low, keeping a safe distance, environmental restrictions, and waiting 24 hours before removing a treated nest. Those instructions apply to that labeled product, not to all wasp sprays. Check the label on the product you have and follow local guidance.
