Before opening walls or buying pipe, confirm your local rules, map the fixtures and existing plumbing, and get the drain, vent, supply, permit, and inspection details approved for your specific project. The installation itself should follow that approved design and the instructions for the exact products being used.
Can you install bathroom plumbing yourself?
That depends on the project and the rules for its address. A like-for-like fixture replacement may be treated differently from new plumbing or concealed pipe alterations, and some jurisdictions require a licensed professional for particular work. Your building department can confirm the locally adopted plumbing code and amendments, whether a permit is required, whether a homeowner may do the work, and which inspections apply.
Local examples show why you should not rely on a general DIY rule:
- Oregon: The state’s Building Codes Division distinguishes some minor work, such as certain exposed fixture replacements, from new installations and concealed piping alterations that may require permits.
- Portland, Oregon: The city lists work on plumbing pipes and fixtures among work requiring a plumbing permit in its jurisdiction.
- Boston, Massachusetts: The city says plumbing work associated with installing or replacing the fixtures listed in its permit guidance must be performed by a licensed Massachusetts trade contractor.
These are examples, not rules that apply everywhere. Ask the authority that serves your property before starting, and confirm whether permit applications or inspections must be handled by you or a contractor.

What to plan before routing any pipe
Draw the proposed fixture layout
Mark the location and type of each fixture: toilet, lavatory, tub or shower, and any additional plumbing fixtures. Include the room and relevant site conditions in the plans if your jurisdiction asks for them. Portland’s standard bathroom guidance, for example, may call for site, floor, and structural plans, and asks applicants to show proposed fixture locations and types. Its requirements are specific to that city and may vary with the project.
Record what is already in the walls and floor
Note the apparent locations and materials of existing water-supply lines, drains, vents, and framing, along with access constraints. Treat these observations as preliminary until the actual conditions are confirmed. If existing plumbing or framing differs from the approved design, stop and have the plans reviewed rather than improvising a new route.
Resolve design details for the actual code and layout
Do not take pipe diameters, drain slopes, trap-arm distances, vent arrangements, fixture-unit sizing, or permitted materials from a generic bathroom diagram. Those details depend on the adopted code, local amendments, the fixture arrangement, and the existing system. A historical federal plumbing manual is not proof that a proposed arrangement meets current local requirements.

First verify whether that code is adopted where you live; a reference book does not replace local confirmation or an approved project design.
How to install bathroom plumbing: a step-by-step project sequence
1. Confirm the authority, code, permit, and who may do the work
Contact your local building department with the project address and scope. Ask which plumbing code and amendments apply, whether the work requires a permit, whether you may perform it as the homeowner, and what inspections are required. Confirm these details before purchasing materials or opening a wall.
2. Prepare and submit the fixture plan
Show the proposed fixture locations and types, and provide any site, floor, or structural information your authority requests. Keep the approved plans available during the work. If the project changes from what was approved, ask whether a revision is required before proceeding; Portland, for example, says a change from approved plans may require a permit revision in its jurisdiction.

3. Have the supply, drain, and vent design checked
Confirm the routing, sizing, materials, and connection details against the locally adopted code and the project’s approved design. Make sure the proposed layout works with the real framing and existing plumbing. The available code and permitting guidance does not establish a universal connection diagram for every bathroom, so this is the point to involve a licensed plumber if the design or existing conditions are uncertain.
4. Verify products and installation instructions
Check that each pipe, fitting, valve, drain assembly, and fixture is acceptable under the applicable code and compatible with the other components in its system. Follow the instructions for the exact products and the approved plan. Do not assume that parts made from different materials or brands can be connected using a method that seems to fit.

5. Complete required inspections before concealing work
Schedule inspections at the stages required by your permit. Do not cover permitted piping or related work until the required inspection has taken place. Portland’s residential bathroom guidance states: “All permitted work must be inspected before it is covered by drywall, concrete, backfill, etc.” That is Portland guidance; follow the inspection sequence set by your own authority.

6. Install and commission the fixtures to the approved design
Once concealed work has passed any required inspection, install the fixtures and complete their connections according to the approved plan and product instructions. Follow the required inspection and approval process through to completion. If the actual conditions do not match the plan, or you cannot verify that a connection or component is acceptable, pause and get qualified help rather than closing the wall or floor.

The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) model-code chapter includes several shower provisions, but they apply only where adopted and may be amended locally. The cited chapter states that a shower drain outlet must be at least 1½ inches (38 mm) in diameter; shower supply risers must be secured to the structure with supports suited to the pipe material or with fittings anchored by screws; and qualifying shower or tub/shower control valves must have a means of limiting the maximum setting to 120°F (49°C). Adjust the valve in accordance with its manufacturer’s instructions.
Confirm local adoption and amendments before using these model-code provisions for a project. Check the instructions for the selected valve and shower products as well; the model-code text does not resolve every installation detail for a particular product or bathroom.

How to choose materials or an installation approach
There is no meaningful universal “best pipe” or connection method without knowing the jurisdiction, approved design, and existing conditions. Use these checks for each proposed material and system:
- Code acceptance: Is the pipe, fitting, valve, drain, and connection method allowed by the locally adopted code and accepted for this project?
- Compatibility: Do the fittings match the pipe material and dimensions, and do the manufacturers’ instructions permit the connection?
- Layout fit: Does the arrangement work with the actual framing and connect to the approved supply, drain, and vent systems?
- Inspection and access: Can required work be inspected before it is concealed, and does the design preserve any access required for service?
- Installer qualifications: Is homeowner installation allowed for this scope, or must a licensed trade professional do it?
When to bring in a licensed plumber
Arrange professional help if local rules require it, if the permit process calls for a licensed contractor, or if the existing plumbing, framing, or proposed drain and vent route differs from the approved plan. A plumber can also help resolve details that cannot be confirmed from a general guide, including sizing, slopes, venting, material approval, and fixture connections. Do not conceal work that still needs inspection or approval.
