How to Grow Lavender Indoors: Light, Water, and Drainage

Indoor lavender needs strong light and excellent drainage. Learn how to choose a pot, water by checking the soil, and propagate a plant.

Lavender can grow indoors if you can give it strong light and a potting setup that drains freely. Put it in your brightest suitable window—or use a grow light—let the growing medium dry between waterings, and never leave the pot sitting in drained water. Indoor conditions vary, so check the soil rather than following a fixed watering calendar.

Choose a bright location or add a grow light

Light is often the main obstacle to growing herbs indoors. Iowa State University Extension advises providing indoor herbs with as much direct sunlight as possible and says most need around eight hours of direct light. That is general herb guidance, not a lavender-specific threshold; the amount of usable light at a window changes with the home and season. Iowa State’s indoor herb guide explains why light is a common limitation.

For lavender specifically, UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County recommends at least 5 to 6 hours of bright light from a sunny window, or supplemental fluorescent or LED lighting for 14 to 16 hours daily. These are source-specific recommendations, not a guarantee that every indoor plant will flower. See the UC Master Gardeners’ lavender guidance.

  • Start with the brightest suitable window you have.
  • If the plant cannot receive strong window light, consider supplemental fluorescent or LED lighting and follow the lamp maker’s placement and safety instructions.

Use a pot and mix that drain freely

Choose a container with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix. Lavender is vulnerable to root rot when soil drains poorly or stays too wet, according to Iowa State Extension’s lavender guidance. Empty any water that collects in a saucer or outer pot instead of leaving the roots standing in it.

Terracotta is one option, not a lavender requirement. Iowa State’s general indoor-herb advice notes that clay and terracotta are porous and dry more readily than less porous containers. That can make soil-drying easier to monitor, but the key is effective drainage—not a particular pot material. Do not rely on a gravel layer beneath the mix to correct a pot or medium that drains poorly.

Water when the soil has dried, not on a set schedule

Let the growing medium dry between waterings, then water as needed. Established lavender tolerates dry conditions better than persistently saturated roots. A universal indoor watering interval is not established by the extension guidance: drying speed depends on the pot, mix, plant size, room conditions, and season. Check the soil before watering rather than assuming the plant needs water on a particular day.

Persistent wetness or poor drainage increases the risk of root rot; Iowa State identifies it as a common problem associated with poorly drained soil or overwatering. Humid conditions, especially in dense plantings, may also contribute to fungal disease. If the pot remains wet, first check drainage and your watering pattern. Iowa State’s lavender page discusses these risks.

Keep fertilizer modest

Lavender generally does not need added fertilizer. University of Illinois Extension cautions that excessive fertilizer can promote foliage at the expense of blooming. The guidance does not establish a separate fertilizer schedule for indoor lavender, so avoid routine feeding without a clear need. Read the University of Illinois Extension guidance.

Start with a cutting if you want to propagate lavender

Iowa State Extension describes stem cuttings as the most reliable propagation method. Growing from seed is slower and less predictable: germination can take two to four weeks or longer, and seeds may need cold stratification. A seed-grown plant is therefore not a quick route to a mature, flowering indoor lavender. Iowa State’s lavender guidance covers propagation.

What to expect indoors

Indoor success depends on whether your space can supply strong light and keep the roots from staying wet. The cited guidance does not establish a universal indoor temperature range or guarantee that lavender will flower inside. Focus on the conditions that are supported: ample light, free drainage, and watering only after the growing medium has dried.
