Does lemon juice make indoor plant leaves shine?
There is no verified lemon-juice recipe to recommend. Illinois, Iowa State, North Carolina State, New Hampshire, and Minnesota extension guidance on cleaning houseplant foliage does not endorse lemon juice or establish its safety or effectiveness on leaves. That absence is not proof that every brief exposure causes harm; it means there is not a sound basis here for applying an acidic household ingredient, especially to valuable plants.
Dust removal is also different from treating mineral deposits or other marks. The extension guidance cited here does not validate lemon juice for either purpose. For a plant-specific problem, consult a qualified horticultural expert before applying it.
How to clean leaves without a shine product
- Check the leaf texture. Broad, smooth or firm leaves can generally be wiped one at a time. Fuzzy or hairy leaves need a different approach.
- Wipe smooth leaves with water. Dampen a soft cloth with plain room-temperature water and gently remove dust. Support a large or delicate leaf from behind as you wipe to reduce bending or tearing.
- Rinse suitable sturdy plants if easier. For a small, sturdy plant, a gentle lukewarm rinse can remove dust. Check the water temperature and pressure first, and avoid rinsing hairy foliage.
- Brush fuzzy leaves. Use a soft brush to lift dust from pubescent leaves rather than wiping or wetting them.
These methods are supported by extension guidance from Illinois Extension, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, North Carolina State Extension, and the University of New Hampshire Extension.

Why avoid detergents and be cautious with leaf polish?
Iowa State Extension warns that household detergents can damage a leaf’s waxy cuticle and cause discoloration or browning, so detergent is not a routine dusting solution.
Leaf-polish advice varies. Illinois Extension allows sparing polish use on firm foliage, while North Carolina State Extension warns that polish can attract dust, clog stomata, and slow growth. Minnesota Extension also advises against leaf shine. A polish is not needed to remove ordinary dust, and avoiding it is the simpler approach.
