Start with an undamaged pumpkin, handle it by the base, and treat decorative pumpkins differently from pumpkin you plan to eat.
Choose and handle a sound pumpkin
Pick a firm pumpkin with an attached stem and no soft spots, cuts, bruises, mold, or wrinkles. Carry it from underneath rather than lifting it by the stem: a broken stem can leave an opening where decay can begin. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, University of Nevada, Reno Extension, and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommend careful selection and handling.
Brush off soil and clean the rind before display or storage. Soap and water are options. Extension sources also describe diluted bleach, but their suggested concentrations differ, so there is no single recipe supported across these recommendations. If you use bleach, follow the product label and never mix it with other cleaners. Georgia Extension, Nevada Extension, and Iowa State Extension provide their respective cleaning guidance.
Store a whole pumpkin in cool, dry conditions
Keep an intact decorative pumpkin out of direct sun and rain, in a dry, ventilated place above freezing. Avoid excess moisture and, when practical, keep pumpkins from touching. Georgia Extension recommends storage above 50°F; Iowa State recommends 50–55°F after curing. Conditions and actual keeping time vary with the pumpkin’s variety, harvest condition, and handling. Remove any pumpkin that begins to decay so it does not remain beside sound fruit.

Iowa State’s postharvest guidance for harvested pumpkins intended for longer storage is to cure them at 80–85°F and 80% relative humidity for 10 days, then store them at 50–55°F in a single layer with good airflow. This is a specific storage procedure, not a requirement for every pumpkin bought for seasonal display. Care for a carved pumpkin
Carving exposes moist flesh and shortens display life. Kansas State Research and Extension says noticeable rot may appear in a few days to about a week; Georgia Extension gives about a week as a typical period before a carved pumpkin shrivels and rots. Carve as close as practical to the date you want to display it.

- Remove the seeds and stringy pulp. Clean the inside and exposed cut surfaces rather than leaving fibrous material behind.
- Keep it cool and avoid freezing. South Dakota State recommends a 50–60°F display range and warns that freezing damages pumpkin tissue. Bring the jack-o’-lantern indoors if a freeze is forecast.
- Use an electric or battery-operated light. A candle’s heat can speed deterioration; a battery-operated pumpkin light avoids that heat source.
- Consider petroleum jelly on cut edges. Nevada Extension recommends coating carved cuts to help preserve them. It may slow moisture loss, but it is optional and does not guarantee a particular number of extra days. Do not use decorative coatings on surfaces if you plan to eat the pumpkin.

Do not treat a cool garage or porch as a substitute for safe handling of cut edible pumpkin. Refrigerate sliced pumpkin; for longer storage, use refrigeration or freezing, or follow an appropriate, validated canning method. Illinois Extension discusses storage options for pumpkins intended as food, including long-term storage under suitable conditions. Decorative cleaning products or coatings should not be applied to edible surfaces.
