A fresh straight cut before setup helps water uptake; additives are not a reliable fix, and a very dry tree may need to be removed rather than revived.
Choose a fresh tree
Check the needles and branches rather than judging only by the tree’s shape. Kansas State Research and Extension advises avoiding trees with dull gray-green color, dry or brittle needles, or needles that fall easily when handled. Penn State Extension also advises against trees with significant loss of green needles on the outer branches or an obviously dehydrated appearance. Handle or shake the tree gently when checking it.
Set up the tree so it can take up water
- Keep it cool while you wait. If you cannot set up the tree right away, store it in a cool, shaded place protected from wind and direct sun, with the trunk in water.
- Make a fresh, straight cut across the trunk base. Penn State Extension advises removing about one-quarter inch; other extension guidance recommends a thin slice. Make the cut shortly before setup, not at an angle.
- Do not shave the trunk sides. Water-conducting tissue lies beneath the bark. If the trunk does not fit the stand, use a stand that fits it rather than stripping away the sides.
- Put the cut end into water promptly. Choose a stable stand with a reservoir large enough to keep the cut surface submerged, then check and refill it daily. Check more often at first or whenever the tree is using water quickly.
Penn State Extension recommends LED lights, which generate less heat than older incandescent lights.
Reduce heat and drying around the tree
Keep the tree away from fireplaces, radiators, heat vents, space heaters, sunny windows, and drying drafts. Heat and low humidity increase moisture loss; cooler room temperatures and higher humidity can slow it. NC State Extension also associates sun and wind exposure with needle loss, particularly when trees are stored or baled.

Skip water additives
Do not rely on sugar, aspirin, bleach, preservatives, or other additives to prevent shedding. NC State Extension says university research has repeatedly found additives unnecessary and that they can aggravate foliage drying and needle loss. Plain water in a stand that stays filled is the supported care approach.
Work out whether shedding is normal or a warning
Some interior needle drop can occur without the tree losing its green outer needles. Needle retention varies by species, individual tree, and year; there is no single universal count that defines acceptable shedding. As NC State Extension specialist Jeff Owen explains, “Needle loss is a complex problem that can result from variation among species, from tree to tree, or from year to year.”

Extensive loss of green outer needles, brittle needles or branches, shriveled branches, and dull color point to more serious drying than a few old interior needles falling. Kansas State Research and Extension likewise identifies dry, stiff, brittle needles and easy shedding as freshness warning signs.
What to do if needles are already falling
- Check the reservoir. If the water level has fallen below the trunk’s cut end, refill it so the cut surface is submerged.
- Assess how dry the tree is. A cut surface exposed to air may seal and reduce water uptake. If the tree has been dry for a prolonged period, is brittle, or is not taking up water despite proper setup, do not assume a refill will restore it.
- Remove a severely dry tree. NC State Extension warns that a very dry tree may no longer take up water and can be a fire hazard. Consider replacing it rather than trying an additive or other product to revive it.
For easier cleanup after taking down a tree, Penn State Extension describes placing a removal bag beneath the stand and pulling it over the undecorated tree. It contains loose needles during removal; it does not prevent shedding while the tree is on display.
