A published wood-framed hut plan offers a practical build sequence, but its dimensions and material quantities apply only to that design. Before taking any shelter onto the ice, check local rules, measure ice conditions as you travel, and plan for carbon monoxide-safe heating.
Choose the kind of shanty to build
Match the shelter to how you will transport and use it. Minnesota DNR distinguishes cabin-style fish houses, which may sit on skis or plates and be towed, from tentlike portable houses light enough to pull by hand. The sources do not establish a general cost, durability, or performance winner between them, so base the choice on your transport method and the structure you want to manage.
- Rigid hut: A framed wood structure gives you a fixed enclosure and can be built with skids for moving. Account for its weight, storage, and how it will be transported.
- Light portable shelter: A tentlike design is intended to be pulled by hand. Keep portability central to the design rather than treating a rigid hut as interchangeable.
If you are new to ice fishing and unsure what kind of shelter suits you, the Minnesota DNR suggests renting one from a resort as a way to try the activity before investing in equipment: Learn to ice fish.
Use a published wood-hut plan as a starting point
Federated Co-operatives Limited’s illustrated Ice Fishing Hut Assembly plan describes a compact framed hut made with spruce lumber, plywood, deck screws, skids, a roof, a bench, a door, and optional window components. Use its drawings and cut list together; the dimensions and quantities are for that particular design, not a universal shanty specification.

- 【60-Second Pop-Up Hub Setup – Instant Shelter in Extreme Cold】 Beat the cold before it beats you. Our innovative hub-style pop-up mechanism lets you this insulated ice fishing tent in under 60 seconds—no poles to thread, no complex assembly, just pull and it's ready. When the fishing's done, it collapses just as quickly into a compact carry bag for easy transport. Spend less time freezing on the ice and more time dropping lines with your fishing buddies.
- 【Insulated Thermal Protection – Stays Warm Down to -30°C】 Fish longer and stay warmer with our double-layer insulated fabric that traps heat inside and blocks biting cold air. Unlike single-layer shelters that lose warmth quickly, this thermal ice hut effectively retains body heat and heater warmth (when used), keeping you comfortable even when temperatures plummet to -30°C. The windproof construction prevents drafts from stealing your warmth
- 【Spacious 6x6 FT Interior】 Bring the whole crew. With a roomy 11.6 x 6.5 x 6 ft interior, this ice fishing shelter comfortably accommodates 6 to 8 adults along with chairs, fishing rods, tackle boxes, coolers, and even a portable heater. The generous floor space lets everyone spread out without constantly bumping elbows. Whether you're with a group of friends or taking the family ice fishing, there's ample room to fish, relax, and enjoy the winter adventure together.
- 【Windproof, Durable & Built for Ice Conditions】 Engineered for the harshest winter environments. The full-metal hub system provides superior load-bearing strength and wind resistance compared to plastic hubs that can crack in extreme cold. This ice shanty stays firmly planted even when the wind howls across the frozen lake.
- 【Ventilation, Visibility & Safety Features】 Stay comfortable and safe throughout your ice fishing trip. Built-in vents help regulate temperature and reduce condensation, keeping the interior fresh even with multiple occupants. Detachable double-layer windows let you control light and ventilation while providing clear views of tip-ups outside. Double-zippered doors allow easy entry and exit, while reflective strips enhance night visibility—a critical safety feature for ice anglers who fish throug
Materials listed for that plan
The plan specifies seven 8-foot 2×4 spruce boards for designated components, twenty-seven 8-foot 2×2 spruce boards for frame components, and eight 4-by-8-foot sheets of 3/8-inch plywood for the listed sheathing. It also calls for deck screws and hardware. Rigid foam insulation is used in the bench; adding insulation in the wall, floor-joist, and rafter cavities is optional. These are the plan’s quantities, not a bill of materials for other designs.
Build sequence
- Lay out the floor frame. Assemble the floor frame and joists around the intended fishing-hole location. The plan allows the hole blocking to be adjusted to suit the desired opening position and size.
- Fit the skids and floor sheathing. Attach removable skids, then sheath the floor. The plan uses hurricane ties to attach skids so they can be removed if they freeze into the ice.
- Frame and sheath the walls. Build the rear, side, and front walls, then sheath them. Stand the walls and brace them temporarily; the plan calls for temporary bracing or a helper during this stage.
- Install the roof. Fit the rafters and roof sheathing after the walls are upright and braced.
- Fit the interior and openings. Assemble and install the bench and door, then add the optional window components if desired.
- Add insulation if desired. The plan includes rigid foam in the bench and treats insulation in the wall, joist, and rafter cavities as optional.
The plan states that builders are responsible for selecting suitable materials, methods, and tools and for checking local code approval. Its skids and wall bracing are design details, not an engineering certification for every site or use.

Check ice before placing or moving the shelter
Ice thickness can change across a single lake, and Minnesota DNR’s general figures apply to new, clear ice—not as a guarantee that a particular spot is safe. The agency says it does not measure lake ice. Its listed guidance is 4 inches for ice fishing or other activities on foot and 20 inches or more for a heavy-duty truck with a wheelhouse shelter. See the Minnesota DNR general ice thickness guidelines and do not treat a number as proof of safety at your location.
Measure frequently as you travel
Minnesota DNR advises waiting for at least 4 inches of new, clear ice before considering walking out, checking near shore, and stopping frequently to check as you move. It describes using an ice chisel or spud bar, an auger, or a cordless drill with a long 5/8-inch wood auger bit, then measuring the ice with a tape measure. A chisel used while walking does not replace frequent measurement. Follow the agency’s ice-thickness checking guidance.

Iowa DNR likewise recommends drilling test holes near shore and periodically while moving, and warns that ice conditions vary across a lake. Its recommended safety items include ice cleats, ice picks, a life jacket, floating safety rope, whistle, first-aid kit, and spare dry clothing. Do not go out if the ice does not look right. Consult the Iowa DNR ice-fishing guidance for the location where you plan to fish.

Minnesota DNR also warns about carbon monoxide poisoning from heaters. Provide plenty of ventilation and follow the heater manufacturer’s installation directions, as described in its ice-shelter guidance. The available guidance does not specify one heater layout or ventilation size that is safe for every homemade shelter.
Check shelter rules for your state and water
Licensing, identification, reflector, waste, and removal rules depend on jurisdiction and can change. Check the current rules for the specific waterbody and season before setting out; do not apply one state’s requirements nationwide.

Minnesota
Minnesota requires licenses for non-portable shelters, including wheeled fish houses. Portable shelters also have licensing and identification requirements in specified unattended circumstances. Owner identification must be visible and meet the DNR’s specified format and size; a shelter left out overnight must have reflective material on each side. Minnesota also prohibits improper disposal of garbage, sewage, or wastewater on the ice and sets seasonal removal deadlines. For 2026, the cited DNR page lists inland-water removal dates of March 2 south of a specified line and March 16 north of it, with separate dates for border waters. Confirm the current details for the intended waters and season on the Minnesota DNR ice fishing shelters page.
Iowa
Iowa has different requirements. Unattended shelters on the ice or state-owned land must display specified owner information in contrasting three-inch block letters. Shelters on the ice between sunset and sunrise must have reflectors on all external sides. On lands and waters under the Natural Resource Commission’s jurisdiction, shelters and construction materials must be removed before ice melt or March 1, whichever comes first. Check the current Iowa DNR rules and guidance for the actual location.
