To make a simple spring clamp, cut a short ring from Schedule 40 PVC pipe, then saw one slit through the ringâs wall. The resulting C-shaped piece flexes open and springs back to grip. These homemade clamps are for light-duty workshop holdingânot a rated substitute for commercial clamps.
Choose pipe and dimensions
Use Schedule 40 PVC for the spring action. Christopher Cunninghamâs November 2024 article in Small Boats says ABS Schedule 40 does not have the spring-like quality needed for this use. Gareth Branwynâs 2015 Make article lists both PVC drain pipe and ABS as possible materials, so the sources differ; for a clamp meant to flex and rebound, PVC is the better-supported choice.
Published dimensions are examples, not a standard. Small Boats describes 1-inch-wide rings cut from 2-inch Schedule 40 PVC, while Vintage Board Co describes 2-inch-wide rings cut from 3-inch pipe. Choose a pipe diameter and ring width to suit the workpiece and opening you need; no universal sizing rule or clamp-force figure is established.
Make a basic PVC spring clamp
- Secure the pipe. Support it in an appropriate fixture before cutting. The Home Depotâs pipe-cutting guide warns that holding pipe by hand alone while cutting is unsafe. Wear eye protection.
- Cut a ring. Saw a short section across the pipe to make a ring. Cunningham describes using a chop saw for 1-inch-wide rings from 2-inch pipe; the article also notes that other wood-cutting saws or a hacksaw can be used. Choose a ring width suited to your project rather than treating that example as a required dimension.
- Cut the opening. Make one slit through the ringâs wall from one edge to the other, creating a C shape. The cut lets the ring open over the workpiece and spring back to hold it.
- Deburr and test. Smooth sharp edges before the clamp contacts a finished surface. Open the clamp carefully, wear eye protection, and try it on scrap before relying on it.
Choose useful modifications

Popular Woodworking and Atelier du Bricoleur describe protective tubing sleeves; a woodworking account also adds two dowel-like handles. These additions change handling or surface contact, but the clampâs basic action still comes from the slit pipe ring.

Use the clamp within its limits
These are convenient helpers for ordinary, light-duty shop work. The sources provide no clamp-force rating, safe maximum opening, fatigue-life data, or basis for using them in overhead, structural, or high-force applications. Do not assume a thicker ring or an added tensioning method gives a known capacity: Make offers only qualitative guidance that a thicker ring may provide more clamping power.
An opened spring clamp stores potential energy and can release suddenly, Cunningham warns. Wear eye protection when opening or handling one, keep your face clear of its path, and check that it is holding securely before letting go.
